Grocery Undercharge

Went to Whole Foods for my favorite: Hannah Organic Sweet Potatoes.

They usually run $1.99/lb.

The cashier ran them up.

Seemed lower in price and I know they weren't on sale.

So I questioned her..'what was the price on the potatoes?'

She said, '$1.49'.

I said, 'I think they were $1.99 a lb.'

She kinda...froze.

Bless her heart...she was thrown SO off that I was questioning

an under-price! But the manager came over, said no problem,

just keep the lower price for the fact I was nice enough to mention it.

Human mistakes happen to everyone, anywhere at anytime.

Next time if I get home & noticed I was charged full price instead

of the $1 off sale price, I can breathe & not get my knickers in a twist.!

It's all full circle.

Life is full of over-charges & under-charges.

They have to give it to you for that price by law. That's why I'm surprised that she called the manager over.

@sidsmom That was very nice of you. I'm sure it did take the store cashier by surprise. I have done similar things and I believe we sleep better and walk with a lighter step knowing that we did the right thing.

If I remember, Lucky supermarket used to give the item, that was rung up wrong for free. ! I like to watch the screen, whenever purchasing groceries, as this happens a lot, either that or remember to check your receipt before leaving the store.

I always bring it to someone's attention if I am undercharged for something, receive too much change back, etc. I figure if the situation were reversed and they didn't give me enough change back or I was overcharged, I would bring it to their attention so it's only fair.

There are a lot of mistakes that happen at the grocery store.

I try to watch as they ring, but I don't always catch things at that moment.

The manager was very nice.

It was all done before the sale was finalized so the transaction could've been cancelled out & re-keyed at the higher price. It was just good customer service. 👍

I was at Trader Joes a couple weeks ago. The clerk and I were chatting and I noticed she was just taking things from the cart and putting them directly in the bag. Brought it to her attention, and we both had a good laugh. Figure it will come back around someday.

@MUNCHIE They used to do that at one of the local grocery stores here also, but they stopped that practice, seems they were giving away too much FREE product because of their mistakes, it should have given them incentive to improve, but NO, they took it away and found another way to sock it to their customers for pointing out their mistakes!

Boy I just read that, I sound bitter, but before I leave I carefully check over my receipts and 9 out of 10 times I find a pricing error, in my area there is not alot to choose from as far as variety of different grocery stores otherwise I would go elsewhere!

Wasn't there something to scan or a code number for that item? Perhaps the pricing hadn't been updated and it was the manager's fault. Nevertheless, they have to give you the price marked. It's the law.

Years ago I was purchasing 2 Bose speakers for my sound system and the clerk only rang up one speaker. I called it to her attention, and after we left the store my friend told me I was crazy to do that. It was just a "gut" reaction, but when I thought about it the clerk might've been docked for the mistake which eventually probably would've been detected. I do think it all "comes back around" in our lives, one way or another.

I would have assumed the potatoes had been on sale. I wouldn't have given it another thought.

Did anyone check to find out what the actual price was before the manager said to charge you the price that's in the register?

Maybe the cashier "froze" because she didn't want to be bothered with making any kind of price adjustment. lol

I totally agree...I also wouldn't have given it a second thought. I figure you win some and you lose some...not really a big deal.

As for the clerk she was proably surprised and by pointing out her error it's creating more work for her and perhaps a mark against her.

I like one of the replies in the comment section.

"I just spent $100 at Whole Foods. This better be a ****** good bag of Almonds."

I like Whole Foods but shop there only for things I can't get elsewhere.

I always recall people calling it "Whole Paycheck".

I shop there, but not for most of my stuff. It pays to compare!
