Quitting Facebook for 2017

I have so many people from high school who are very,very religious and people from the military on mine, who are mainly narrow minded (don't agree with my values lol ). I have wealthy people who like to brag about their fancy house, car, etc. I have regular excoworkers who like to brag about all of their possessions. As much as I say don't, I still have friends that post pix of abused or dead animals. It's just depressing and getting on my nerves. Also the bashing of my political candidate. I respect opposite opinions when they are polite. I mainly post animal pictures & am liberal for the most part (live and let live...if it doesn't impact my life I'm not judging). Any comments? Anyone else have these issues? I don't argue or comment on things I don't agree with, just scroll. I've just realized that these people from 20 years ago don't really matter.

On Facebook friends who are too over the top for me, I just unfriend them. Easy. I unfriended 4 just before the election. Their postings were just too too much. I do the same if the religious postings get to be too much. I respect everyone and their right to their beliefs, but when they start criticizing my political choice or beliefs in life, I'm done.

Facebook is a pleasant place for me to be. And I tweak it occasionally so that it remains that way.

Are there people you like to see on facebook? You could unfriend them or there is a setting to hide their posts or there is a setting on what order the posts appear. Just some suggestions. If you totally want off, you can close your account.

I'm on your side of the street politically, and I won't tolerate certain posts. People who would never dream of saying certain things to your face, become lunatics on line.I do very little social media, and if you are offensive , you get blocked.

No need to quit - just do a mass Unfriending.

People you don't actually communicate with and haven't maintained an actual relationship with, if 80+% of their posts annoy you, just Unfriend them. They most likely won't know, and they most likely wouldn't care if they did know.

No one ever has to accept every Friend request they get, or stay FB Friends with someone forever.

Be aware that no matter how much you might think "your posts don't stink", I guarantee you that some of your posts probably annoy others as much as theirs annoy you.

I have a couple of Facebook friends who not only have views that are completely opposite of mine, they don't bother to verify the truthfulness of the things that they post/share. I simply choose not to see their posts in my feed. Instead, I go to their page if I want to see what they're up to. If I un-friended them, they'd notice. This way, they have no idea that I'm not seeing the garbage they post.

Yep. I have to say that after unfriending the 4 and then another 1 last month, my news feed looks great. It's not a big deal to unfriend people.

If you don't really know these people now and know them from 20 years ago, why not quit them instead of quitting Facebook?

If it's their posts that bother you and not their comments on your own posts, you can also choose to Unfollow the individuals without Unfriending them. That way you can go check on their pages when you want, but their content won't be pushed to your own page.

If you don't really use Facebook much, go ahead and leave it for the a while and see how you feel. I think that's a great idea. But if you use and enjoy Facebook except for these people, I'd cut them loose one way or another and keep using Facebook.

I use Facebook to help me organize my time with real life friends. We have a girls night out planned this weekend and my book club also makes all its arrangements and keeps in touch with Facebook. It also helps me keep up with all my activism and political groups. It's a valuable tool for me and would leave a gap if I gave it up, but everyone uses it differently. If it's easy for you to give up and using it makes you unhappy, let it go.

I must be in the minority - never joined.

My husband did, but gets very frustrated at some political opinions.

Plus he gets all these msgs to play games.

I like keeping in touch, the old fashion way, by making phone calls (and sometimes emails )

i have never un-friended anyone. i did block my sister. the good thing about this is they don't know it and so no one gets their feelings hurt or gets angry.

i have all the political and religious stuff along with the abused animals. just terrible. i ignore it the best i can.

what i've seen twice now and it really, really got to me is a picture of a mother and her child in a coffin. who does that? that nearly sent me over the edge.

what i did instead of deleting my account was to take a break. quite a long one and it worked! until the next time though. lol

You can also block people who aren't your friends but show up in Friends' posts.

A wman I don't care for is a "friend of a friend" and her offensive comments showed up on my page. I don't want her anywhere near me in any way so I just blocked her. She can't see me at all now and I can't see her. Peace on my Facebook page!

You do not have to quit or unfriend people. Just unfollow them and their posts will no longer show up for you. After thinking about it forever -- my New Year's gift to myself was to deactivate my account. I can reactivate it whenever I want to just by logging in. When I was logged in all the time I did not have the self control not to keep checking and it became the world's biggest time waster. Now if somebody wants to contact me they will see that my account is deactivated and they will have to do it another way. I thought I would really miss it -- and 10 days in -- I have not missed it at all. It was taking me an hour every morning just to scroll through all of the posts since the night before. I am actually getting a lot done! LOL!

You can unfollow them at any time -- unfollow means you don't see any of their posts. You remain Friends, and they never know that you unfollowed them. I do it all the time. Certain relatives with interests far from mine, I just unfollow and peace remains.

I think if you unfriend someone, they do know you unfriended them, and that's a whole different conversation.

I've always considered myself lucky and after reading the OP's FB friends I know I'm lucky.

I had a lot of good friends in high school. We 'get together' on FB. Only one of the males drove me crazy about his political beliefs and I finally unfriended him, but just because he kept (I think) trying to change my mind.

My high school had several people in it who became famous and some who became very wealthy, but you'd never know it by their postings. I enjoy reading about their lives and what's going on with them.

I don't know if it's because we are all around 70 years old but to us our families are what's important. If we brag it's about our grandchildren (how wonderful they are). If you're reading about a friend and see they are happy in life, why wouldn't you be happy for them (as they are for you)?

Everyone has to do whatever they feel is right.

That's terrible! If you see posts like that, visit the page of the person who posted it and you will see a Following button on the person's page. Click that button to get more options. One option will be Unfollow. if you click that, you can remain friends with that person, but his or her posts will no longer show up in your Facebook feed, you will have to visit your friend's page to see what he or she is posting.

I did that a lot around the election because I had friends on BOTH sides of the spectrum who posted some crazy stuff I didn't want to see. I'm still friends with them, but now I don't want to strangle them whenever I see them in person.

Nobody really bothers me on Facebook. In fact some of my friends are relatives that are really quite amusing. I am confident in my own beliefs and not phased much by differences of opinions. I enjoy the "bragging" posts because they are doing well in their lives and I am happy for them. Life is short and I don't want to sweat the small stuff. I enjoy Facebook because it keeps me connected to the world. There are times I haven't been able to do as much lately so it's fun for me to read about those who are able to...

No, it isn't. There may be reasons, with some people, where it isn't all their posts that annoy you all the time, where Unfollowing works out best. But you will still get Notifications that they posted something, even if it's not in your Feed. Example: I had people as Friends (including Family) who used their FB account for 100% political posts. I hate that cluttering up my Feed even when I agree with them. When I Unfollowed them, I'd still get 25+ Notifications per day that they'd posted something. I had to either Unfriend them or put them in a different category to escape the Notifications.

No one receives any sort of email or other notification if you Unfriend them. If you make a lot of posts, or post every day AND they read all your posts, they may notice they're not seeing them any more, but there's no "Mary UNFRIENDED YOU!!!!" Thing going on ;-)

As someone posted, the FB default is to 'follow' someone so you can see what they post or like on your newsfeed. You can 'unfollow' them if you feel you want to keep people as 'friends'.

I only unfriended those who posted way out there unverified fake news stuff.

I feel much better now after doing that.

If people get argumentative on your wall, post a reminder that people posting are 'guests' on your wall and you should not have to play referee on your wall. Tell people to take their disagreements to private message.
