BIG tree in California didn't survive!

The Big sequoia tree in Calaveras County California was toppled by the weekend storm.

The tree was hollowed out in 1800. It's not clear why the tree fell, but probably had to do with the giant sequoia's shallow root system.

So glad we walked through it last October. Sad to see it in pieces on the ground.

I just read that article. What a shame. They said the tree was dying anyway and it couldn't withstand the storm over the weekend.

Very sad to see this magnificent tree in ruins. We've gone through it several times and it was so cool. Seeing how the tree looked like it disintegrated into a lot of tree pieces (like shredding) upon falling makes me think that it wasn't truly "living" and that a great portion of the tree might have been very dry and just couldn't hold up.... what a shame.

The North Grove included the 'Discovery Tree' noted by Augustus T. Dowd in 1852 and felled in 1853, leaving a giant stump which is the only remainder of the tree. It measured 25 feet in diameter at its base and was determined by ring count to be 1,244 years old when felled.

What's sad imo is that someone cut it down in the first place. It's been just a stump since 1853.

I have pictures of my husband and I driving through that tree and later with our sons in tow. Natural or not, it's sad to lose the 🌲.

Yes, I know. I live in the heart of redwood country, and the old growth is protected.

But even they, will one day die, whether by disease, or a storm blows them over, they will die.

Nothing lives forever,

Not even the oldest tree.

Poor Tree. It would or may have stood a longer time if an idiot didn't think it was something novel to do to carve/saw a hole through it.

Pretty sure this one was a Sequoia. in a grove of giant Sequoias. Unfortunately, this great tree didn't die a natural death, it was killed, cut down. That's sad imo.

It says tunnel trees were popular in the 1800's, used to promote tourism. I don't think they're made any more.
