FUN THREAD - THINGS YOUR MOTHER USED TO SAY

i don't know if today's moms say these things. They seem to raise their children a little more "gently" than I was raised. (I'm 67.) Today's moms raise children to have great self-esteem. Maybe they still say these things:

Money doesn't grow on trees.

When you grow up, you're going to have a child who acts just like you.

As long as you live in my house, you'll follow my rules.

Don't wash your food down with milk.

Go ask your father.

Chew your food 20 times before you swallow it.

And my mother's famous saying that we all still laugh about. When she was fed up with discussing an issue, she would say: "DROP IT! Drop it on the floor and don't pick it up." LOL!

I tried the "do you know how many children are starving in the world when you have that food to eat?" My son replied with " can you send this food to them then?" 😳

@Justholdingon ... OMG...I used to hear that one all the time too! My mother always used China as the place where the children were starving. I was not a picky eater either, but my mother was a member of the "Clean Your Plate Club." I especially remember having to sit at the table until all my milk was gone. I dislilked milk then and still do. When I grew up, I found out that my mother won't drink it either!

My tough ! But fair German mom had a million of them, but I heard this countless times, " If everyone jumped off a bridge , would you ?" There is no answer to this, LOL.

Some of those are funny now that I'm a grandmother.

Mom always said, my house my rules.

Money doesn't grow on trees.

And my very favorite now that I'm an adult is: You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar, so be nice to people.

@alicedee .. That is a good one! I think I said it to my children too. My brother once got into trouble when my mother said that because he asked if he could switch mothers! GROUNDED!

My Grandma used to say, "Keep your legs crossed". You can figure out what she meant. I think it's good advice.

haha-I was just going to post this! My mother said it once when I did something incredibly stupid and dangerous (forgot what it was but remember what she told me!)

I was born after WW2 and I always heard about the starving kids in Europe. I had the same quip as your son.

Sure there is...

My response was 'can you be more specific'? What bridge, how high is it, what's below it, what time of year and who is "everyone"?

Additionally, if everyone is jumping off the bridge, there must be a reason especially since "everyone" would include her.

We use to have many trees on our property and I would always climb them and would be sitting up there on the top reading a book or just relaxing. Some of these trees were higher than our three story house.

This would make my mother nervous and she would tell me " If you fall out of that tree and break your legs, don't come running back to me."

If we asked her where something was that we lost or couldn't find she would say " It's down in the basement behind the furnace."

By today's standards, one might say her style was a tad harsh. Sure, she was Italian and had a short fuse, but she was responsible for supporting me and my siblings and she worked hard. She didn't have time for putting up with nonsense from us. We "toed the mark" (another of her lines) and turned out just fine.

She taught us to appreciate good food and books and to love animals and plants. She was the one who brought home strays and our first Beatles records. She was a pip.

Stand up straight!!!!!!!!!!! (who knew years later I have mild scoliosis and she'd get so aggravated at me)...

Don't buy something cheap that's going to tear up and then you have to spend more money buying it again, get good to begin with.
