dont know where you live, but we switched a few years ago from nationwide to ERIE......they have been very good and the savings was significant. we moved all of our policies to erie (except for our national flood insurance, which is issued via nationwide)

I switched to Amica insurance a few years ago and Ive been very happy with their service and their prices.

If you can pick up Consumer Reports, its worth reading. some insurance companies are using your credit scores to determine your rates not just driving record.

Car insurance is like life insurance; regulated by the states so your premiums can vary with someone with the same criteria across yur state line.

Theres something called Price Optimization. Only six states that do not allow this practice- CA,FL,MD,VT,OH, and WA

They use various data to determine hiw much you are willing to tolerate and pay and what are the chances you will actually change carriers.

Amica is one of the few companies that stated their rates are based on your driving record/ insurable risk.

Allstate, gieco, progressive, and usaa declined to comment when asked about price optimzation.

after 15 years with Nationwide, I switched to amica and saved 600 a year on home and auto.

I am 64, live in Phoenix, own a 6 year old car with full coverage and $250 deductible. I had 2 accidents, not my fault because my car was hit while parked. My insurance company had to pay in full for both accidents except for my deductible. I pay $660 per year for the car and my homeowners insurance. Maybe its my age, but I do drive for my job and the insurance company knows that. I have State Farm. There has to be a variance for location and maybe even agent. I once thought about changing agents but staying with State Farm. The bids I got were higher than my own agent.

Denise, you might try going to an independent agent. They don't represent just one company. They offer choices. There are some insurance companies whose rates for single woman are very favorable. They want you! An independent agent knows their companies and can guide you to them.

What's the Blue Book value of your 13 year old car?

If your car has no or a low value why would you carry collision insurance on it? If you were to have an accident, they probably won't fix it. They will just total the car and give you the lower book value amount. You could end up with a zero pay out.

An independent agency who sells insurance from many insurance companies can look for a better rate for you. Also, if you belong to a credit union, you might be able to greet a lower group fee.

Shop around.

There are soooo many factors that go into the formula for what an individual pays for insurance that it can't even be discussed here intelligently. There is your age - your driving record, things like tickets and accidents - the value of your car , a 12 year old mercedes is much more valuable than a 12 yr old Ford focus - the area where you live and where you regularly drive the car. Theft is more prevelent in some areas than others , as is vandalism - how many miles the car is driven regularly, and is the car driven daily. Weather where you live, is the car driven in the snow and ice or do you live where it is always warm out. is the car parked on the street or locked up in a garage. There is also the factor of what you buy in a policy, do you want full replacement value then you would pay for that. How big is your deductible, How high a value did you buy for personal injury and major medical? of course the better ins you buy the more it costs.

These are just the variables I can think of off the top of my head.
