All the homes aren't mansions, the streets aren't paved with gold and not everyone drives a Maybach or a Tesla...

Exactly!

But even the areas with enormously successful people aren't the way LR misrepresents. My neighborhood has lots of celebrities and very wealthy people. But it's certainly not non-stop parties or people trying to impress each other. I hate the way it's been stereotyped as an area that's filled with shallow, designer-obsessed, round-the-clock partiers with money to burn and no values of substance. That's not the case at all.

People who have money usually dress the way they want, buy what they want, and don't give two figs about what's "upscale" or about what someone else tells them is the lastest thing. It's the wannabees who get caught up in all that nonsense.

Visited family last night who live in Pebble Beach, for a birthday party. Not every home in PB is a multi-million dollar mansion or overlooking the 18th hole or with a view of crashing surf. Some people have lived there 30-50-60 years and bought when it wasn’t what it has become. It is very secluded though. If you don’t arrive via GPS you’d better bring a bloodhound and someone’s t-shirt or you’ll never get there.

I imagine there are similarities with the Hamptons, Beverly Hills and Montecito, as well as Napa. Not everyone who lives in a wealthy area is rich as in buy anything you’d ever want.

If (figurative) you feel it necessary to label something as upscale, it most probably isn’t.

Yet another meaningless dribble amongst so many others.

A “so upscale” very plain fabric and design tote bag that looks like...a rather clod-ish tote bag. Utterly genderless and utterly without charm. But “so upscale.”

I don’t know what’s creepier - that they say this because they think it will impress people, or that it does impress some people.

Not everyone keeps ups with the latest trends or know what is upscale and what isn't. There are some very plain rather ordinary items that are designer, cost a lot of money and are considered upscale. Many people including me just don't know that because it's not items we shop for on a regular basis.

Ones "ordinary or cloddish" is someone else's upscale. That ordinary and cloddish looking tote might be a knock-off of a very high-end designer item.

Years and years ago I bought an Ecclissi sterling watch watch because I liked it. I had no idea it was a knock-off of a Cartier watch until I had people commenting about how much they liked my "Cartier" watch.

Upscale doesn't mean wannabe anything. The definition of upscale is relatively more expensive.

There are plenty of wealthy people who wear labels of some kind. Most designer handbags have some type of label on them whether it's the Gucci "G" or the interlocking CC on Chanel, etc. Watches generally have a name on them, there is the tell-tale red sole of a Louboutin shoe and so forth.

People who know high-end and upscale also know designer items by seeing them, whether they have a label or not.

Do I think there are upscale items on QVC? In the true sense of the word, no. Do I think there are items that are meant to look upscale (ie knock-offs)? Yes.

If someone selling watches out of a suitcase tells you they’re genuine Rolexes... Knock-offs are everywhere. If I can’t buy the real thing, I don’t want a wannabe copy so I’ll be identified as a wannabe. That’s what Lisa Robertson is doing - selling wannabe copies so suburban housewives can tell themselves no one will know it’s not designer.

Trendy isn’t the same as upscale.
