Ineresting question -- so I just checked. According to Wikipedia -- the term has been around since the early '80's. You can Google for more information. Too many outside links in the writeup to put the Wikipedia link here.

It was first used by marketing firms to try to reach the masses, those who are not typically considered a "gastronome", which is a big fancy word for someone who enjoys fine food, wine, etc.

So it got dumbed down to "foodie"

It's cutsey

@Moonchilde. That is exactly right.

And it's human nature to put down things we don't "get." Half of my family thinks haute cuisine is a burger & fries or ribs and Bud Light - and never misses an opportunity to say so. The other half have spent their adult lives involved in the food industry as chefs, event managers/coordinators, and sommeliers.

Someone could have a hobby of stamp collecting and someone else will come along and say that's a dumb hobby, who cares, what a geek. Another person might redecorate their house once a month or spend thousands on chicken tchotchkes, which I find stupid - but I wouldn't say so.

Thank goodness there is so much out there to learn about and treasure. It's endless, but at the end of the day it's about those things/ideas/projects that makes us happy and feel good. If you walk by something in your house that you know you spent too much money on and you're the only one that loves it but every time you pass by it you tell yourself "Gosh I'm glad I bought"..... then you did good!! And no one else's opinion matters....
