What can we believe?

Hey everyone, I am not trying to find fault all the time, but today I did have the sound on Gourmet Holiday and was watching TJ eating NUTS!! I may be wrong, but on one of his very first food shows, he said he is allergic to nuts? And would not eat or touch anything with nuts....today he was putting away a bowl of Squirrel Cashews...I guess I am pretty gulliable as I mostly believe what Hosts say about their health, oh well.

Maybe it was someone else and you are mistaken. Why would one say they are allergic and are not? Makes no sense. If they are allergic it would be stupidity to eat them. Seems you are really digging to find fault, but who would be at fault and for what?

@Bellajay @Maryrose828 Might be right. You can be allergic to peanuts and not other nuts.

Peanuts are not the same as tree nuts (such as almonds, cashews, pistachios, walnuts, pecans and more), which grow on trees. (Though approximately 40% of children with tree nut allergies have an allergy to peanut.) Peanuts grow underground and are part of a different plant family, the legumes.

i have no idea if he is allergic to any nuts or not, but the creme brulee cashews that he was eating does contain peanut oil and may contain peanuts or other tree nuts according to the nutritional information.

Peanut allergy is caused by an allergic reaction to the peanut protein. Peanut oil is typically safe because it's highly refined and has almost no detectable allergen (protein). This is the type of peanut oil often used in cooking and frying and is safe for individuals with peanut allergy.

In fact, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) specifically exempts highly refined peanut oil from needing to be labeled as an allergen the way “peanut” would need to be.

I keep a notebook full of information the hosts say so I can refer back to it. Many times I will see an item and take a few notes to jog my memory and it often helps to note the host. I also do this with my Bible I got from the QVC during Bible study.

@Marp I am allergic to peanuts and I did not know about peanut oil not being an allergen. I have been avoiding peanut oil thinking it would be the same as peanuts.

I might try a pasta salad had a local resturant that is made with peanut oil. Before I developed an allergy to peanuts, I loved that pasta salad. I may work up the nerve to try it again.

@KathyM23, I'm not going to discourage you from trying your favorite salad but please be cautious just in case you are one of the rare ones that is hypersensitive.

You would have to be certain proper procedures are taken at the restaurant to prevent cross contamination in the event they use peanuts in any recipes.

It would be a good idea to discuss this with your doctor first or at the very least have an EpiPen at the ready.

It's no one's business but hers. Besides, hosts will say anything to make a sale - they're salespeople.

It makes sense that peanut oil is exempt from peanut allergies because the burger chain restaurant Five Brothers uses peanut oil for their fries etc. I’ve never seen a warning sign anywhere.

@RescueLover, many/most "fast food" restaurants use peanut oil for frying. If fried food from French fries to chicken to egg rolls and stir fry are offered there is a very high probability the frying was done in peanut oil.

@RescueLover Peanut oil is used for deep frying because it has a high smoke point.

You can heat it up to a very high temperature ( 450 degrees) and it won't smoke or burn.

It has no distinct flavor.

No you are wrong, it was TJ, and no I am not digging to find fault,was more concerned about him getting sick! Jeez seems that one can not worry without being taken to task.

Others here posted that he had a peanut allergy, and I am glad that they let me know,and the differece with tree nuts and peanuts.

BTW I like TJ and was not bashing him.

I would think he knows his allergies as an adult an all. Does his allergy situation have a direct bearing on your purchase of a nut product? I don't get it.

"Saving the Turtles", nothing to get...unless you really want to make this an issue. I am new here and sorry that my posts have been confusing and not on par with the group here. But I have found most have been kind here, and not digging at my thoughts.
