Email regarding QVC hew privacy statement

Just received an email that QVC has a new privacy statement. They used to say that will not sell your information to others, this says they are now and if you read the whole thing you get will get emails now from companies that buys that info. You can opt out of it of course if when you get each email you unsubcribe at the bottom. If you what to opt out of this you can by deleting if information. I went to see how you can do this and found out that deleting your account with QVC totally and they say "I will miss you" if you do it. You now cannot buy anything from QVC. I know that other companies sell your info but if you read this statement it is much more. Guess making a buck at the expense of their customers now is a new trick to saving the company. I was always inpressed that they did not sell our private info. Going to wait and see how much junk emails and texts will be coming.

Under your account you can click on email preferences and you can check opt out of all emails (but can still get emails re your account like when you order something etc).

However when I tried to do this it wouldn't submit, just kept going back to same screen so I don't know.

Well, that's interesting information. I guess I'll have to go read all of the fine print.

It might explain, however, why I suddenly started getting emails from companies I've never dealt with.

I never thought that they would resort to selling our personal information but, if it's true, I'll have to rethink dealing with them. There's only really one brand that I get through QVC that, to my knowledge, I can't get anywhere else.

I'd hate to close my account after decades of shopping with them, but I would seriously consider it. Too many places now are using our personal information for their financial benefit. I don't need any more spam emails or snail mail.

*** It's just occurred to me that I have purchased PTR products from QVC and some time ago, I started receiving emails directly from his own website, even though I'd never ordered from that site.

I guess I know now how he got my email! I'll have to see if any other emails connect with QVC.

QVC has shared customer information with other companies for a long time. The email they sent simply outlines updates that were made to their privacy policy, which is something every company is required to do on a regular basis. I've received similar notifications from other companies I do business with over the past couple of weeks as they work to accommodate changes to California privacy laws (which are frequently updated to protect consumers).

Here's the message QVC sent:

Dear QVC Shopper,

We're emailing you to let you know that we've updated our Privacy Statement to describe how we use personal information by providing services as part of our business operations. We encourage you to review our full privacy statement, but wanted to quickly highlight a few of the changes including:

Giving all customers more choices to control personal information, including obtaining a copy of personal information and deleting personal information
Reorganizing how we describe the types of personal information we collect, the purposes for which we use the personal information, and how we track the use of our services
Explaining how we share personal information with our affiliated companies and with other companies
Providing additional information related to state privacy laws

While no further action is required, you can always review our current privacy statement at https://www.qvc.com/content/information/privacy-statement.html. If you have any questions, please contact us. We look forward to shopping with you soon!

This is an interesting clause in the long "Privacy Policy":

Information relating to former customers. If you cease using the Services, we will continue to use and disclose your personal information as set forth in this Privacy Statement. You will continue to have choices in managing your personal information and may make these choices using the methods described above.

So it seems, even if you close your account, they'll still use your information as they see fit.

I recently closed a long-time account I had with a company in England and they advised me that they had to contact each of their affiliates to instruct them to also delete my information. That's what I would assume should be done.

Oh this is cute.

I'll check this out and then decide what to do..... I can always cancel my email and make a new one. I can always cancel my phone number and get a new one.... etc..... cancelling out may indeed be an option.....

I have a junk E-mail that I use for everything internet. I generally check it once a day to see if there's anything of interest, but I only ever actually open a very small percentage of what I receive.

I respected QVC for not selling our information. I knew they shared it between their own affiliates but this really lowers the regard I've had for the company. The last things I need are more solicitations, junk mail and emails. I'm sick of shredding, deleting, blacking out offers, answering the phone and every other intrusion companies come up with to annoy me.

QVC need revenue and other companies moneyize customer data, I get that, but QVC was also supposed to be working on customer retention. I don't think this move is going the help with customer retention.

They think they "have you" by stating that even if you quit them, they will still sell your information. But if you change your information the best you can, they will be selling invalid information.

I think this will be the way I may be going.

This was a bone-headed move. I've been on QVC over 30 years. Doing this to your customers is not what I thought QVC would ever do just to make money. Too late now though, huh?

I don't know how but I just pulled up the privacy agreement and under each state laws it tell what you can opt out of. I told them not to share or sell my information and send targeted messages. You can type that in. Just keep reading and look for your state.

@on the bay did you check the box that says "unsubscribe" on the left before you hit submit?

Yes, thats what I was saying (or meant) that I kept checking that unsubscribe but when I clicked submit it just kept showing the same screen, not confirmed or anything.

I tried several times. I don't know.

Oh wait! @Sage04, you made me want to try again. So I minimized my screen cause thought maybe that was it. Anyway this time up above the selections I see "your preferences have been saved," in I think a tiny green color.

I kept looking for a different screen showing confirmation or something at the bottom that said updated but their message is up above.

@Sage04I always opt out but it seemed like maybe we had to do that again? not sure because usually i've found that first preference carries over with any new privacy policies but just to make sure. Anyway, yeah I hate to get any emails or mail that I didn't ask for.

I'm really chewing on this one. Probably wouldn't bother me near as much except for hearing the hosts for years saying we will never sell your information and this email says that is exactly what they are doing.

I just checked out where everyone is talking about changing email preferences. That only has to do with emails from QVC and it does work.... but it absolutely has nothing to do with the fact that they are selling your information. I will have to think on this but I think it may be time for me to drop QVC and HSN completely.

Oh I read it as opting out of marketing emails but you may be right that that is just opting out from QVC emails.

I have never heard a host say they don't sell your info, but maybe I've missed that in the past 20 years of the internet.

I'm not really concerned about this, as every business I deal with does the same, from my insurance company to the university I attended. I get random emails and send them to junk or block. Every once in a while it's something I'm interested in.
