Question about a tea kettle

Hi there,

I had bought one of Tem-Ta-Tions tea kettle over the holidays.

I rinse it out every day before using it & I read another blog ealier tonight saying another person bought one of the Christmas tea kettles also & while cleaning it out all this black color came out on a paper towel while she was drying it out. .

That also happened to me tongiht. I was cleaning out the tea kettle & all this black color came out on the paper towel. Can someone tell me what that is & if it's dangerous ?

I am now worried & I'm going to throw this tea kettle away.

I also want QVC to now this happened also. I'm sorry I bought it. I don't want anyone to get sick from using this kettle.

If anyone know what this black color is & how it happened please let me know.

I would definitely send it back as defective. Contact the social team at qvcsocialteam@qvc.com. I would think the inside would be stainless, not painted. I would not use it again. Just saw them on clearance yesterday, too.

I have had a kitchen aid teapot for years and years. Wonderful product.

Was it glazed black on the inside of the kettle? I don't understand how it would come off. You'd best return it - seems to be defective.

My husband drinks a cup of tea every morning. And brown color from the tea coats the cup that he used.

I have to scrub the cup after each use. If I don't the cup gets coated in dark brown. Even putting the cup in the dishwasher doesn't get rid of the brown coating. It has to be scrubbed my hand.

@drizzellla I remember a woman I used to work with drank tea out of a mug with a white interior.........it was badly stained brown. I've been drinking more tea than coffee lately and mostly use a silicone straw as I worry about the stains on my teeth. I alwo look for mugs with dark interiors.

@HoliBerryThat sounds dangerous and as others have suggested a defective return seems in order. Have you considered a glass electric kettle? The water seems to heat quicker, glass is easy to clean and many light up when heating they're actually quite pretty. Inexpensive too especially on Amazon.

You don't say what kind of kettle it is. Is it an electric one that heats the water? Or the pot you actually make tea in? If it's a teapot that you brew tea in, what you could be seeing is the residue left by the tannin in the tea. Depending on how strong the tea is, it can build up to different degrees.

But "black"? That sounds strange.

Do as others have suggested: email QVCSocialTeam@qvc.com and explain what you've said here. It could be that for some reason the interior of the kettle isn't food safe. In that case, you should not lose the money you paid for it and QVC will want to be made aware.

Let us know how you get on.

@drizzellla @cindyNC - I've been a tea drinker my entire life and never had a cup or mug that wasn't cleaned by the dishwasher. The set I currently use are about 20 years old (Dansk).

It may be that the mug(s) in question have a porous interior (as opposed to glazed) or have become so over time.

Really heavy staining can be removed with baking soda.

(ETA: @cindyNC - My mugs are white interior. Your co-worker just wasn't cleaning her tea mug! Yuck.)

I suggested one of those glass kettles that you can set to specific temps depending on what you're drinking to DH and found one at Costco for him. He loves it. He's a coffee drinker, but he wants to pour over water at just the right temp. I drink hot tea, but I'm not as particular and use an instant hot water spout at the sink.

I don't use a mug, but a large Contigo thermal thing, and it gets black inside. The lid is especially difficult to get it all out, but it does come out in black flakes with the use of a toothbrush.

Are you only heating the water in the tea kettle or are you brewing the tea in it? I have a different brand tea kettle and Ionly use it for heating the water. I brew the tea in a separate mug or tea pot.

If you are only heating water in the tea kettle and getting a black residue, you should stop using the kettle and return it to QVC as defective. If you are brewing your tea in it it is probably residue from the tea.

Hi 4Kitties,

I use the kettle to boil the water for our tea in the morning.

It is a Temp-Ta-Tions tea kettle. I just got very nervous last night when I wiped it out & all this black color came onto the paper towel.

I have been using this kettle for a few months. I went onto Goggle & they say it's mineral deposits that build up. Can all this be dangerous being that I've been using it & not knowing that all this was building up inside the kettle. I do rinse it out every monring before using it but, when I wiped it out last night to dry it - all this black - it scared me.

I will e-mail the QVC Social Team & see what they have to say about it.

Hope they get back to me.

I'm still confused. You said you use the kettle to boil water for your tea. Do you then insert the tea bags into the kettle to steep? Or is water the only thing that has touched the inside of this kettle?

Hi Santorini,

The water is the only thing - I do not steep the tea bags in the kettle once the water is boiled. I put the tea bags in a cup & then pour the boiling water into the cup. The water does not come out black after boiling.

I'm just nervous because I've been using this kettle wthout knowing all this.

Again, I did goggle all this & they said it's mineral deposits from hard water that makes this happen.

If you or anyone goes on to QVC.com & looks up this tea kettle there is another review there that this happened to her also. If I saw that review before I bought this I never would have bought it.

I will contact the Social Team to see if other people complained or what they know about all this.

Those Temptation electric kettle look so pretty. I somehow prefer glass so that I can see the water boiling. I bought an Elite electric kettle in 2016 and it's still going strong.

In 2018 I bought another one just incase and so far it is still in the box.

Thanks @HoliBerry. Yes, this does sound like a problem. Like the others have said, the tea can leave stains and I was hoping that was the source of the problem. Thanks for clearing that up. I'm glad you emailed the company.

If it is indeed just mineral deposits from your water fill the kettle with half water, half white vinegar and boil. Once it has cooled down enough for you to handle wash it out with some of the vinegar and water mixture left inside. Depending on your water it may take more than once to get it clean again.

I have one of the Temptations enamel over stainless tea kettles also...it is decorated with the winter whimsey Christmas design. I use it to boil water for tea and instant coffee, but it is only out for a few weeks during the holiday season. I have had no problems with it.

The rest of the year I use a teal enamel over stainless kettle which is just like the Temptations one - except, of course, the color. They will sometimes get black or brown residue in them from rust if you do not empty the kettle completely every time you use it. After you pour your water, discard the rest of the water and remove the lid so the inside can dry out completely. If you allow water to sit in the kettle between uses they will rust inside.

Unless your kettle is defective in some way, this could be your problem.

I will never purchase another Temptation item again. About 3 years ago, I bought my niece 8 different pieces of Temptations. Most of them cracked or broke. She only has 1 piece left. And she takes care of stuff, so I know she wasn't knocking the stuff around.

This stuff is now garbage in my eyes. I have two of the original pieces that were on air when Tara first came to Q. No problems with these pieces. But I notice the stuff now made is thinner and cheap. Sad.
