A new sneaky practice

I was away during the holidays and turned on QVC this morning for the first time in a couple of weeks. There was a Makowski handbag sale going on. I noticed that the QVC price was not shown. Rather, some bogus estimated retail value was displayed, making the so-called clearance price look miraculous. I find this practice highly deceptive and won't succumb to this obvious marketing ploy. Come on, QVC, please don't treat your customers as if they were !d!ots.

I've noticed that too and agree that it is deceptive. My trust in QVC has been completely eroded due to their tactics.

I do not see this as sneaky or deceptive. You know what the product is and the price you will pay. How is this sneaky or deceptive?

Of course, if you will not "fall" for it here, I can only assume that you refuse to shop at Macy's, Kohl's, and Bed Bath & Beyond -- all of which have similar practices.

This is just one example of the reason I seldom buy from QVC these days. I used to buy several times a month, now I might have one or two purchases a year. When I started watching the Q, one of their standards was offering an item at a certain price and guaranteeing the price would never go up -- they would discontinue an item if it became more costly. (I realize that could be an untenable policy, but I admired their integrity.) Also, their s&h was reasonable, products genuinely were reliable quality, clearance prices were good, customer service was top notch, and shipping was fast and efficient and you knew you really would get unused, undamaged merchandise,. And they had variety -- imagine that...

Step by step, they've lost credibility. I don't trust the company now. Perhaps they don't care about those of us who know what's changed and they hope new customers won't be the wiser.

You are not understanding the problem. It's definitely a deceptive practice and one that started a couple months ago. I've never seen that done at the Q or anywhere else in merchandise. It's deceptive, sneaky, snarky and a terrible thing to do.

It is deceptive because the QVC price is not the msrp price. So, when they show the msrp price and tell you the clearance price is a certain percentage of that, they are trying to make it seem like you are saving more than you actually are. You may only be saving 30 dollars from the original QVC price, but then they are showing the msrp price, which may be 75 dollars more and they crow that you are paying 75 dollars less, rather than the 30 dollars, which is the truth.

Vivian you make an EXCELLENT point, QVC should show what the ORIGINAL QVC price was and not just some retail value (and since retail price can vary---which retail from what part of the country are they using anyway).

I know other retailers have their own systems and their own set of codes....but just because others do it, does it mean that QVC has to follow suit, why can't QVC, like the OP is asking for, show some honesty and integrity.... The excuse that some have used sounds like a little kid saying, "but mom everyone else is doing it" OR in the adult translation, just because one retailer is being deceptive is that an excuse for all to follow suit........

Don't even bother trying to explain it to the Q resident cheerleaders because per them, of course, the Q can do absolutely no wrong... Everything they do, sell, promote and over-program is simply stellar...

But for the rest of us... yes, they DO increasingly try to pull one over and by doing so, yes, they are disrespecting us. QVC has always shown BOTH a QVC price and a 'retail' price. The retail price, quite frankly, sometimes seems to represent somebody's fantasy... By moving away from showing their normal asking price they are, indeed, trying to dupe customers into thinking they are saving more than they are. Had they NEVER had the practice of showing both prices, THEN perhaps they would be in the same category as other stores mentioned, but they have and so they're not... Moreover, as noted, I believe that in some instances they set their retail price where they think it should be and I don't believe it is always the MSRP...

As for Makowsky bags, rest assured they almost NEVER sold elsewhere for the prices asked here and they certainly don't anymore, since this brand has become all but defunct. This is the only retailer I know that still carries them in any great numbers... I don't even see them anymore at discount stores.

I've often wondered, since it's always the same few that can NEVER see anything worthy of criticism... You know, I don't care where you shop, NOTHING is perfect in every way, but to hear some tell it... the Q is... Oh brother!

Those that are the most critical of anything and everything about QVC sure have no problem with posting here.

I have to wonder if other businesses pay some corporate shills to be critical of QVC and to get those who can't think for themselves to jump on the haters bandwagon and get them to quit buying here!!! To hear some talk, QVC is an awful place to do business with Just seems too bizarre that these Q haters just don't shop elsewhere. Something is definitely not right here !!

That's because this particular board is The Q Did What... it's designed to be their 'complaint department'... Those who think everything here is rosy might want to consider The Q We Love... Pretty clearly, a significant number posting on this board might have once loved the Q, miss what it used to be, but are no longer feeling the love...

Yep....EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL......

QVC has to be careful, despite what our enthusiastic cheerleaders say,.... after all QVC has a track record when it come to their prices, some woman in Illinois brought a lawsuit against QVC over the manufacturers retail price, QVC's price, QVC's featured price etc etc hence the long and lengthy definition of each category that you hear one of the Q's host reading from time to time which was the result of that lawsuit....so the ole "everyone is doing it" doesn't quite hack it....

As for the Mak brand....you don't even see Bruce hawking "designer" tablet covers anymore....

This is from QVC itself. So, to cry that they are being "deceptive" and "sneaky" is completely 100% wrong.

I really believe that the reason they don't put the old price
on sale items is because it's embarrassing to show that it's only
sometimes a dollar or two cheaper!!!

When I go to a department store sale, the manufacturer's suggested retail price is usually an inflated number that makes customers think they're getting a bargain. However, the store's regular asking price is always on the tag. Then, if the item is on clearance, that additional information is also on the tag. Has anyone gone to a clearance sale at a brick & mortar store where there's no consumer information on what the product orginally sold for? That's essentially what QVC is now doing. I agree they're doing it to deceive us about their puny discounts. It's not the most ethical way of doing business.
