When our youngest grandson was in high school-just a few years ago- they were not permitted to use the term gypsy. Had to say Romany .

@Group 5 minus 1 - That's interesting. I think the term "Romany" is more specific to one country and would get a lot of pushback. I have a good friend whose daughter is marrying someone from Romania next month.

I see nothing wrong with the term "gypsy." To me it's like "cowboy." :

The Roma people find the word gypsy insulting and reject any use of it to refer to them.

Here's the difference (compliments of Reddit) between Romanian and Romani peoples:

"Roma and Romani- terms referring to a specific European ethnic group. Also known as Gypsies, although this term is now considered derogatory. Romanian- relating to the nation of Romania. The name "Romania" is not at all related to the Roma, although, as with many European countries, many Roma do happen to live in Romania."

I've grown up admiring gypsies - wild and free, very artistic. bohemian culture and lifestyle. I used to dress as a gypsy as a little girl for many halloweens - guess I better not run for office!

I just did a quick search on roma or romi and I think I gather that 'gypsy' people are not all one people, not all romi. Romania, Hungary, northern India. baltics, i think too.

Perhaps those in the area are offended by gypsy. Just call people what they want to be called. It's really that simple and easy to respect others.

Aside from the name, I was curious about their offerings so I tuned in---for about 5 minutes.

Most of their items I've seen at Hobby Lobby and elsewhere. That's not a bad thing, but nothing unique in my view.

I wish them well, however...but I'm sure their name will continue to be a sore spot for many.

I never would have thought of gypsy as being offensive. Stevie Nicks uses the word in some of her songs as did Cher, "gypsys tramps and thieves"........that was a great song.

When we visited Spain the word gypsy was used often, there are many there and we were warned about them as they are known for stealing from the tourists.

@Witchy Woman I was just going to post the exact same thoughts. We have a new Hobby Lobby in the area. They have an extensive supply of decorative items similar to this brand and Valerie Parr Hill ....and great sales. Even our Marshall's carries some nice decorative things.

@LindaSal In your post you gave us two perfect examples of offensive stereotyping. Should all Roma people be grouped with tramps and thieves? Do all Roma people steal from tourists?

Some Romani are thieves, perhaps even a higher percentage than some other ethnic groups. But not every person on earth of Roma descent is a thief.

I wasn't stereotyping, I simply named a couple of artists songs and I don't even have a reason to ever use the word gypsy. As far as Spain, the locals there used the word and were giving warnings about them. I didn't suggest what you are stating.@PickyPicky2

warned about gypsies. It was sad to see a little crippled boy, sitting on a skateboard, begging by the Trevi Fountain. It was also sad to see young mothers with babies, begging. It did play on our sympathy, but our tour guides told us that is how they appeal to tourists. It was hard to resist giving to that little boy.

@LindaSal I never meant to imply that YOU were stereotyping. You were just sharing info. However, it's examples like these that make Roma people want to separate themselves from "gypsy" as an identifier.

Back when Cher's song was popular, I never gave a thought to the use of "gypsies" as demeaning. That was 50 years ago (!!) and times have changed. I don't believe those lyrics would be acceptable today.

The moth formerly known as "Gypsy" is now "Spongy."

In July, 2021, the Entomological Society of America officially removed the perjorative "gypsy" as it was commonly known and reassigned the Lymantria dispara with the common name of "spongy moth."

I have no opinion on the Junk Gypsy folks but just assume that PC may eventually catch up with them.
