QVC using the term "Latinx?"

Do they not realize Hispanics hate that term, lol?

It was cringe-inducing hearing Rachel say that ridiculous word during Gourmet Holidday when the actual Hispanic small business owner was saying Latino/Latina.

I like Rachel, but she uses terms with connotations that are questionable, probably just because she thinks the terms are current and "cool." She needs to be more circumspect. She can offend or shock. Words matter.

@ellaphant Did you mean "Latinx"? You wrote "Latin" and, yes, there is nothing offensive about "latin", but I doubt that was your intent.

Hate is too strong a word,

Latinx was created as a gender-neutral alternative to Latino or Latina, like Ms. in the old days. A lot of women didn't like that term, just like a lot of Hispanics don't like this term.

Rachel is of mixed heritage and was adopted at a few months old. It wouldn't surprise me if she had some Latina in her so she can say whatever she wants.

@proudlyfromNJ I have been simply amazed lately at how many take something someone said and "infer" something sinister out of it. Something that has nothing at all to do with what I posted. . .

And yes, I'm not going to worry about it.

Exactly what Kachina said. GET USED TO IT. Latinx do NOT hate the term, and it is being used more and more in scholarly research or publicly disseminated writing. The word is not "ridiculous," or "cringe-worthy," but a great inclusive term embraced first by the younger generation.

Individuals can still say (and most do) I am Latina, or Latin, or Hispanic, as they choose, but the term Latinx is completely appropriate and acceptable in the public domain. This term is being used mainly in the U.S., as most immigrant people of Latinx heritage will refer to their individual country of origin (Peruvian, Mexican, etc.).

MORE POWER to Rachel for being at the forefront of knowing what is happening in the cultural world. And yes, I have the creds (street slang for credibility) to back up everything I am saying. I have already used this word frequently in high level professional academic research writing.

I'm not Hispanic, but if they don't want to be called Latinx, shouldn't we at least try to respect their wishes?

I was born in Attimis (Friuli) and today on QVC parmigiano (parmeegeeahno) once again was pronounced ‘parmeesahn”. No such word in Italian and then they are selling meatballs and spaghetti; no such thing exists in Italia. We Italians do not and never have eaten spaghetti and meatballs; it’s an American thing and that’s okay, but don’t sell it as Italian.

@Malcontent Many years ago, all through college, I waitressed at a NY restaurant owned by three Italian brothers who were only here 3 years from Napoli (Naples). Of the entire staff, the youngest brother and I were the only ones who spoke English. Spaghetti with meatballs was on the menu, of course.

People order what they know and like, the same with food they order from QVC. I remember reading that meatballs and spaghetti was first invented by Italian immigrants to the US, maybe around 1900. Italians created the dish not, as you say, Americans.

As you said, parmigiano is pronounced par-me-jann in the US, Americans also mispronounce manicotti, proscuitto and other Italian food names. Most people in the US don't speak Italian.

I have heard that Latinx is now an acceptable gender neutral term to describe people from Latin American countries. If someone doesn't like the term, they can use Latino or Latina instead.

I'm put off by a lot of the hypersensitivity surrounding these issues. It would be best if we all just called ourselves Americans.
