That may be your opinion, however...

The motor on my Soniccare tootbrush died 2 weeks ago so I needed the Toothbrush TSV and ordered one. My first Soniccare toothbrush was a xmas gift many years ago - a practical gift I appreciated because I wouldn't have spent that much money to buy it for myself at the time.

We are also in dire need of a new mattress so the mattress TSV may be something I actually need.

These mattresses sold without a box spring baffle me. Many of us have a bed frame that require a box spring. What are we supposed to do?

Oh, I get it! Order from a mattress store where we can get what we need.

The mattress in a box craze is huge right now. There's no way QVC can ignore it and not present it themselves.

They still have plenty of traditional mattresses on QVC that still get air time (unfortunately )..

So here are my questions - what kinds of things do you want to receive as gifts - and what kinds of things (besides gift cards) do you like to give others?

I'm at the point in my life at which I don't even know what to do with all I already have, so it makes choosing the few gifts I give hard to choose. don't even like goft cards as gifts although that's what I use for most life-changing events such as weddings and graduations.

Haven't seen a Serta TSV in a while. Q is liking these bed in boxes more including the Northern Nighs and Scott Bros. I would still be hesitant about the bed in box. For one thing, what do you do with your old mattress? Getting rid of it yourself could be a hassle not worth dealing with. Then there is the boxspring question that Carmie talked about. Something about bed in box just doesn't seem right. Like what are the chances all the springs and everything straightens out and expands correctly without little dips and what not?

There's no formulatic answers because it depends on the likes/dislikes/interest/hobbies of the recipients---

FOR ME---

Jewelry---theres an artisan line everyone knows I like thats reasonably priced you can find things for $30-$50

Books by a favorite author that usually appear at Christmas time.....

Music CDS

Movie DVDS

Bath & Body Works Candles/Soaps

favorite sports teams t-shirts

Jim Shore collectibles

Perfume (several go in together)

Donation to one of my favorite charity (friends know which ones)

FOR OTHERS---

I have several friends that love to cook---so a cookbook, a kitchen gadget, bakewear, or a new skillet or pan, etc etc---Home Goods has good prices on these

Book of a favorite author that comes out in the Christmas season.....

Bath & Body Works Candles or Soaps......

Perfume

Athletic Socks/headbands (a couple friends are into running marathons and they like to receive these from a sporting goods store)....

Movie DVD

Slippers (one person likes one particular brand sold at Dillards/Macys/JCP/Kohls

Lipstick (they have a specific brand and color they like)

Charity Donation

@Carmie. Use your old box spring. By the way, my picky sister has this mattress and loves it, even with serious back issues.

I am still on the fence regarding this type of mattress. More important to me, is it's reliability over time. If you are not looking for it to last beyond a few years, it might be a good purchase. I think I am just old school, and prefer a mattress with support of good box springs.

Shows me though why QVC keeps selling mattresses, and toothbrushes, and vacuums as we head to the holidays because like me, you and those who buy for have lots of wants that are brand specific. I assume that's why so many families do registries and lists or gift cards.

I know sometimes the practical items aren't as much fun to watch, but I might actually spend some money on a toothbrush, a computer, or even a new mattress in the forseeable future, so sometimes I look just to keep up with what kinds of things are available.

Its an individual preference. There are some people that do want and enjoy practical gifts...my sister is one...So its whatever you or the people on your gift list want....

But big ticket items at Christmas like a mattress or even an expensive laptop carries a big price and with all the other expenses involved in the holiday season and the gifts for others etc etc etc....that seems to me that they are asking for a lot of debt come January..... I laugh at that commercial where the young husband buys two $49,000 trucks--one for his wife, one for him....thats Almost $100,000....I wonder what job they both have and I wonder how much they spend on stocking stuffers....LOL..

I can see practical items for those that want them....But I think hygiene items are a bit tacky unless the person you know REALLY wants something of that nature, but I wouldnt give those things as a gift unless someone specifically wanted it......JMHO

@SandySparkles. Most people do use box springs with this type of mattress. They use the old one but get rid of the old mattress. A bed looks disproportionally low without the box springs. I don't know about the TSV but the memory foam beds-in-a-box generally have 20 year warranties, longer than a convential mattress.

@Kachina624 I would never use an old box spring. First, the mattress and box spring should be replaced at the same time. Second, who wants an old box spring that doesn't match the mattress? Not me.

I am in the market for a new mattress, but I will buy locally. I want a mattress set, not just a mattress.

The TSV mattress is pretty cheap. I would prefer a better quality mattress too. You get what you pay for.

Nope, not bed in a box. They are left on your front porch. You drag in, set up. What you do with the old mattress is still a mystery.

My city will pick up oversized items like a mattress for free. You call in the request and they tell you what day to put it at the curb. It’s no trouble.

My son has a platform bed that doesn’t use a box spring and is quite comfortable.
