Is This New For Reviews??

I have long lamented the policy of QVC accepting reviews from people that have never purchased or received the items of which they are submitting an opinion.

But I noticed this addition to the review process:

I confirm that this review is based on my personal experience and is my genuine opinion. I have no personal or business relationship with this brand, its owners or employees, and have not been offered any incentive or payment to write this review. Find out more about QVC's Ratings & Reviews Standards.

It is now a requirement of the review process. You must check the box next to this statement in order to leave your review. So it seems to address two issues. One, is people leaving reviews with no personal experience with the item (I'm assuming that should mean they have not personally received it or purchased it as a gift). Two, is the duplicitous practice of some people connected to the brand or the brand's competitor leaving a review for monetary gain.

I write many reviews, and I read them as well. Of course I take them with a grain of salt, but being able to look at multiple reviews to see if there is a pattern, good or bad, can be extremely helpful.

I am very happy with this recent step, QVC! Thank you.

I’m glad they added that, but I think it should say that the reviewer owns the item.

@Caaareful Shopper Although, I suppose someone who has NOT purchased or experienced the product could say they have. How would QVC know for sure? If people are leaving bad reviews without having purchased the item, then I don't think it would be a stretch to imagine they would continue that practice but indicate they have purchased the item.

@Caaareful Shopper. That is new and long overdue. I did a review last night and that statement was not there. I think they have someone new reviewing the reviews. There have been many complaints about things that were being done.

@Caaareful Shopper I am happy to see this. I was looking at a Halston top this morning & there was a review written by someone who did not buy it. That's ridiculous & affects the ratings of an item. I think this new policy is smart and overdue.

HSN won’t let you post a review unless you bought the product and have had it for at least 5 days. Why can’t QVC do this?

Although I'm sure there are some who will still abuse the system, I applaud this step on QVC's part to encourage legitimate reviews. Hopefully that confirmation requirement will at least make people think a little before posting.

On a related note, I recently reported a vague one-star review that had been posted for a book that is on advance order and won't be released until next month—two days later, the review was gone. I'm guessing I wasn't the only one who complained, and I'm happy to see that someone out there is trying to help customers have access to better information as we make our purchase decisions.

Agreed. Its a gesture to satisfy legal department.

Those who post falsely negative reviews out of spite or a general dislike for the manufacturer aren't worried about whether their anonymous review is honorable.

It's a start, a very small one.

People who want to trash a specific line without owning any items, will just check the box and leave the review. I wish QVC would verify the purchase before a review is accepted.

The new rule is all well & good but.............I've lost track of the number of Reviews I've wanted to read and none are posted. Yesterday 3 hour food presentation - and In the Wed Kitchen - and a couple of Dennis items. There are fewer and fewer Reviews posted. So good for new rules - but 'what difference does it make?"

I tried to review an item on HSN the other day and it wouldn't allow it because I hadn't purchased it from them. I wanted to review the Kuerig mini that they had as the TS. I had purchased it back, I think, in Oct. from QVC when they had it on as a TSV. Anyhow, it would have been a good review because I really like it. I can understand their reasoning, though.

You make an excellent point @World Traveler — if someone still wants to submit a bogus review, they can lie & click the box anyway.

But consider those that said in the past that there’s nothing wrong with submitting a review without purchasing because it’s their opinion. They like the vendor and they will give it a “review” anyway, even saying they hadn’t purchased it. Maybe this will give them pause.

Yes, it's not like these reviewers are placing their right hand on a bible and their other hand up to God - although that doesn't seem to account for ANYTHING nowadays....

I agree it addresses the issues, but if I'm not mistaken, it does nothing to stop either from continuing if all one has to do is check the box.

One time when a similar thread was started around a year ago, a poster thought QVC should verify that the person had, indeed, purchased the item. I guess they were to look the poster's purchases up and verify it that way.

But there are some products on QVC that I have tried from other places, so technically one could put in a review without having purchased it........from QVC. It could still shed light on whether the product is one you might want to spend money on.

I just got an email today from QVC suggesting I post a review of an item I purchased. Kind of a "tell us what you think" email. So I think QVC is using that venue of getting reviews. Doesn't mean my review would be good; could be bad. But at least they have a system in place that automatically sends out a suggestion to post a review, and they would know for sure that the person purchased the item. I don't get that every single time I order something, but I have gotten it several times.

@World Traveler I also received that email nudge from QVC to review a purchase. Not every time, but once in a while.

Some posters have suggested HSN’s method. Their system can tell if you purchased the item, and you have to wait at least 5 days after delivery before you can submit a review. I like that!

@Caaareful Shopper What I highlighted in red indicates to me that a reviewer could certainly own what he or she is reviewing but acquired it from some place other than QVC, or simply saw/used it somewhere (like visiting someone who owns it).
