Mispronunciation

Just a gentle correction.

The jewelry line, "Alex and Ani" is pronounced "Alex" (like normal) and 'Ahh-nee," phonetically speaking. I keep hearing hosts and commercials pronouncing it, "Annie."

I live in Rhode Island where this line originated, so of course, I love it.

I wonder if the company has tried to get the correction - that might be the only way to get it done. I know I've always thought "Annie."

@Suziqzee If the hosts and commercials pronounce it that way, I feel sure they have the support of the company to pronounce it that way.

@Suziqzee If the hosts and commercials pronounce it that way, I feel sure they have the support of the company to pronounce it that way.

Whether they're right or wrong in this instance, I have to disagree with your statement--there are plenty of hosts who mispronounce product names and other words on a consistent basis. I often wonder why no one steps in to help/correct them.

I happened to be watching some of this presentation with a friend and the host kept mispronouncing Swarovski. We both commented that, if they're supposed to be professionals, they should at least learn how to pronounce something, especially such a well-known brand. it's not that hard!

Some preparation would help. And, yes, it does grate on the ears, when you hear something repeatedly mispronounced.

I have tons of Alex and Ani bracelets (most given to me as gifts) and never, ever heard the company's name pronounced any way other than Alex and Ah-nie. Mind you, I've never seen a QVC presentation for this brand, but I'm a bit surprised anyone mispronounces it since it's been around for awhile. This reminds me of Etienne Aigner. Years ago, QVC sold this brand and the vendor would comment that people pronounced it differently depending on what part of the country they lived in. Some pronounced it, "Eti- ahn Ahn-yay", while others pronounced it, "Eti-ahn AG-ner." I had never, ever heard the latter, but apparently others did by the comments from callers. Another word that comes to mind is "suite" as in bedroom suite (of furniture). I have only heard it pronounced as "SWEET", while people in other parts of the country pronounce it as, "SUIT." You say to-ma-to, and I'll say to-mah-to. LOL.

As someone who as spent her entire life with my name being mispronounced, hearing your name said incorrectly is like nails scraping across a chaulk board. If people looked at my name they would say it correctly, however, most people don't.

In a professional setting there is no excuse for prouncing a Company name incorrectly. If you are representing a product from a company, it is your responsibility to pronounce the name correctly.

I have even seen announcers before kids sporting events validate pronunciation of names with coaches before starting the game.

I get you. I have a very simple FIRST name and you'd be surprised how it's been mispronounced throughout my lifetime. My last name is another story. No one gets that right. Wish I could share both names but not comfortable doing so here. I try to chuckle now when I get a bizarre spelling or mispronounciation for either name.

I'm often surprised that there isn't some quick pre-show preparation/production meeting when the hosts could be given the correct pronunciation of names and products and have the opportunity to practice. Unless the host just rolled out of bed.....or doesnt care to attend meetings.

Another one is the Dooney and Bourke line of handbags. It is not Burke but Bourke. Can't think of how to spell it phonically but I'm sure you get my meaning.

I know for a fact that such meetings go on at the Q, especially with new items and with hosts presenting items they haven't worked with before. And at least most of the hosts claim to do "homework" on their shows prior to going on air. My guess is that they either aren't paying enough attention or didn't learn/understand what they were told about the products. Plus there are a few hosts that just speak way too quickly and overrun the vendors, so there's no opportunity to clarify or correct errors.

It may seem like just a simple unimportant thing to some, but to me it speaks VOLUMES as to how much time and preperation the host spent on that product.

If the host can't even pronounce the name right, then how much of what the host is saying about the product isn't even accurate and is just pure sales BS... HOSTS need to do their homework, that's what they get paid for to know the product they are selling!!! You hear about all the pre-show meetings they attend, so arent they even paying attention!?!?!!?!?!?..

Like the sports analysts, and broadcasters if there is a player on a team that has an unusual name they are given a phonetic prounounciation so they make sure to get the name right....

Some of the hosts talk about the production meetings and how they went over the products that were appearing in their show.....and some of the host make their "pick of the show" product....

Actually, that brand is pronounced "burke" (as if the "O" isn't there or silent). It's a British brand and that's the British pronunciation of the second part of the name.

In fact, one of my British friends is visiting with me right now! So the hosts are getting that one right.

The mispronunciation of words, whether a company or not has reached epidemic proportions. There used to be a "standard" that those in the industry would adhere to, but that is no longer in place, replaced by regional (and often made up) mispronunciations. It's now SO prevalent and so ignored that I don't believe it can be corrected at all.....~!
