question about deleted comments

I was wondering why some comments when they get deleted in a thread say the reason, like unkind. But some are just gone with nothing said. Why is this? Just curious. Thank you.

Don't think the moderators owe an explanation. They do their job and that is that. Also less attention, by not providing a explanation, is probably best.

IMO and I am just guessing, if they see a thread that is going in the wrong direction , it is easier to just get rid of it.

A thread deleted for being controversial almost always annoys me because what is one person's controversy is another's legitimate concerns worthy of discussion which can happen without posters being unkind.

We are not Stepford Wives, we think and live in a world of reality, or at least most of us do. If everyone would avoid being "political" or "unkind" we could post about whatever is going on that stirs serious thought.

@CherryHugs Are you asking because you see posts deleted by mods with no reason offered? A poster can delete their own post and it just disappears and there is no notice; I am not sure if you can do this if the post is quoted or hearted.

@San Antonio Gal Thank you; I wasn’t sure. Hate it when a good discussion gets going and then posts disappear. I can understand deleting personal attacks, but I think we can overlook a few posts that go off topic and resume the conversation. That’s how face to face conversations ramble on too.

When QVC made changes to the website and Forum Guidelines they conducted several surveys and obtained comments and feedback from the Forum community. One of the things that the community asked for was when a comment or thread was deleted we wanted to know why so we would know what to avoid for future reference. The moderators agreed to do this. This was back in 2014/2015

For the most part the Moderators do a good job giving the reason why. If no reason is posted perhaps they sent a private email to the person, or maybe in some cases its pretty obvious as to why so they dont post it. But if someone questions it, then you risk questioning moderation which is a violation of Forum Guidelines. Now some have asked for an explanation nicely because they want to do the right thing and avoid future violations and the Moderators did give them an explanation

The rules are outlined and need to be followed uniformly, an exception should not be made just because everyone was getting along nicely---all that does is confuse things, and creates further arguments with posters of accusing others of preferential treatment and why was this thread deleted and not that one. There are plenty of other Forums to discuss controversial topics and politics. I hate to bring up a cliche, but their board, their rules.

People have flame wars over the smallest stuff as it is without opening up that can of worms. (someone complimented Leah on her weight loss and several were offended because the compliment focused on weight and appearance and the thread turned argumentative)

Remember, afterall, this is just a shopping forum! Other retail forums that also had open discussions got shut down because it took to much time to deal with it all......so everyone should keep that in mind also.......

But the ones I dont understand is the Moderators just blocked out the reply button.... They dont even say closed for commenting

I made a comment that I thought Amy talks too fast and I couldn't understand her... I got blasted by posters and the thread was deleted. I didn't think I said anything nasty or snarky...just made an honest comment. I stand by my statement that she talks too fast. Some posters get a pass, others don't. Selective deleting.

It is a curiosity isn't it... Unfortunately, moderation is, at times, all over the place... Also unfortunately, it is what it is... Personally, I preferred the less moderated forums of days gone by... Unlike some, I see few advantages to what some view as the 'kinder, gentler' experience...

You got it right! You cant even leave a suggestion in the Suggestion Box without being attacked! (Let QVC determine if the suggestion has any merit ---Sheesh!)
I am so tired of these self appointed moderators!!! Your right, saying a host talks too fast is NOT an unkind comment, that is constructive cricitism. I wish the Moderators would start deleting those snarky comments attacking any type of feedback. Right there in the Guidelines....

Personal attacks are not allowed - Don't attack or insult another Community member. It's not helpful and it doesn't make for a friendly place. This includes calling other members names. Disagreement is no excuse for poor manners and we will not allow frustration to turn into a personal attack.

But the problem is its not a "kinder, gentler" forum, "the fan club" uses a bullying tactic, which is think like they do OR ELSE...and they get the thread shutdown because it gets so out of hand the Mods have no choice but to take action....

If people disagree why cant they just state their opinion ON THE TOPIC intelligently without the snarking and attacking others! There would also be less need for moderation too.........

@Spurt This is interesting, isn't it... A few days ago, I was over on one of those supposedly 'heartwarming... feel good' sort of maudlin threads there appear to be so many of... I took a slightly different tack with my comments than the prevailing oooh and ahhh and, of course, was blasted for it by one somewhat prominent (aka mouthy) poster... I responded in kind but with a reasoned perspective... Guess what, I was deleted for being 'argumentative' but the other post, which was quite snarky and indicated point blank that the matter was pretty much none of my business and that I must have a problem for responding as I did, stood... Go figure...

What I also find fascinating is the fact that some of these posters have such infinite sensitivity with the 'grabbed from the headlines' tales of woe and yet seem absolutely incapable of mitigating their own snide remarks to posters who might have a different point of view...

I've also noted the specific mod who took the aforementioned action has in the past seemed to have a field day with certain of my comments but permitted precursors, perhaps more in keeping with her own point of view or perhaps posted by those she likes better, to remain...

At the end of the day, its a forum and I'm not going bat guano crazy over anything they do or don't do, but there are times when the inconsistent application of 'the standards' is glaring...

@Spurt Absolutely true about the somewhat bullish mentality often exhibited to differences of opinion, as noted in my previous post (assuming it's still there...) but I have to disagree about whether or not the mods have choices... They do... Some take the time to edit posts and threads rather than the easier wholesale deletion... and some are at least egalitarian when deleting posts that ostensibly are 'problematic' as they see it, anyway... Most of the time a deletion is noted and a reason is offered...

At other times, and there appear to be only a couple 'over-reactors', the path of least resistance seems to be to simply shut a thread down at the merest hint that there might later be confrontational posts... I don't know, it just seems a bit lazy and rather arrogant, as does the practice of deleting some 'offensive' posts but not others and as does the occasional choice to delete a post without mention or offering a reason... Clearly, some moderators are 'better' than others and one can only suggest that perhaps they need their own set of 'standards'...

I wish all the moderators would always at least leave the "stem" of a deleted thread (the topic line and, in the body, a brief reason), and also add a reason when a thread is left intact but closed for additional comments. Even just a word or two would be beneficial.

It helps us to know what was deemed to be problematic and it does cut down on re-posting something identical when we can see what was cut or closed.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, we were advised with the new platform launch that there would be explanations for post or thread removals. In their "Welcome Get Started" they do say:

We may lock a thread - If a thread has turned into a non-constructive argument between users, or derailed entirely off topic, we will lock the thread to block further commenting. We will always share a reason why the discussion was locked.

Since this only refers to "locked" it's unclear if this applies to those with the OP and all replies removed, but I would think they'd want to do the same thing for all.

I understand that we don't know for certain everything the job description entails. We know there aren't many moderators to cover all the days and hours; the number of sub-forums, threads, and responses to review adds up quickly; they serve as liaisons with the IT support department; they answer inquiries submitted on the website and directly through email; they research customer support concerns; and they monitor the official QVC social media accounts. There could be more? I have no idea.

I do know that I appreciate the work they do, yet I feel more and more uncertain about how we are supposed to follow the published standards and guidelines because it seems to me they're enforced more and more unevenly. For example, some thread bumping is permitted, other times it's not, some links are removed while others that are identical are permitted to stay, etc.. Now that there also seems to be a change in policy about banning posters permanently with no recourse... to be honest, I don't feel as comfortable posting here.

I really don't want to lose my access to read and post — the truth is this: since I first registered in 2010 I've never before felt as uneasy and uncertain about what's expected of me as a Community member as I do now.
