Beware ...

I purchased an LG TV from QVC a few years back (about 4-5 yrs ago) and it was not cheap. I always thought LG was one of the best brands out there.

At 3:00am this morning, I woke up to find that my TV set in the bedroom had sound but no picture. Needless to say, there is no service contract / warranty at this point. I had to purchase a new TV, although I didn't purchase it from QVC.

I researched the problem on the internet today and it turns out that the LG LED Smart TV, after about 5 years of use, has this problem. It's actually LIKELY to happen, as it DID. I am going to see if someone can fix it (if the price is right) but I needed a TV now. If it can be fixed, I will move it to the living room.

What gets me is I've NEVER had a tv last for so little time. I STILL own 2 Magnavox tv's, never serviced that are both over 25 years old. I THOUGHT this LG would be long lasting as well. What a surprise.

Beware. I've also purchased at least 3 HP computers from QVC as well when they were TSV's (different ones at different times) and have never had anything but problems with them. Worst purchases I've ever made.

Just wanted you to beware.

@LilMadi How long was the warranty for on the TV?

In the future buy your expensive electronics from a local Business.....that saying, you can not blame QVC for a TV with problems five years out. Few electronics have warranties more than maybe one or two years. After that who knows how long they will last?

Most TV's today are throw away......good luck in getting it fixed.

This is an LG problem.

Our LG is at least 7 years old and going strong, thankfully.

i don't do LG or HP (except printers). i am in the electronics field and have great access to any mfg. also exposed to all the issues and challenges with all mfgs.

my personal choices are:

tv = sony

laptop = lenovo and surface

phone = samsung

printers = hp laserjet

Same thing happened to the Haier TV I got from QVC, although it lasted about 7 years. I wasn't surprised because Haier is mostly a refrigeration company. I liked it because it had an ivory bezel, but it had horrid audio.

Thank you for the heads up. I always suspected the electronics were sub-par at qvc not to mention too expensive for what you’re getting.

I think the easy pay makes it attractive because the outlay is high for items like this so I’ve been tempted though.

I would never buy a tv from QVC, I always go with Costco or Amazon and buy an extended warranty. I like to read the specs and the reviews on Amazon.

I never buy electronics from the Q. I do buy a lot of clothing, makeup, shoes, kitchen and decorative items.

@LilMadi, I don’t think my tv lasted as long as yours. LG is a brand I avoid now. I also agree that Sony makes a good tv. I gave my 50’Sonty away but it worked like a charm. I have Samsung which I like and a Pioneer which was pretty expensive. It is my favorite tv in the house. LM

Having been forced out of the electronics repair business because of the terribly high cost of replacement parts, you probably won't find many TV techs any more. There isn't anyone being trained in repairing any electronics except for the few that die while still under warranty. Warranties have gotten shorter terms also. Back in the day, a Pioneer Stereo system would have a 10 year warranty, don't expect that today. I was telling customers years ago that the cost of repair was more than the cost of a new replacement. You can't even get a refridgerator repaired now. Those parts went sky high, too. As far as getting electronics from QVC, my TV is from them. I don't know if I'll do that again, it will depend on Brand and cost. Today's sets have hardly any life to them like the old sets had. My one old set is 30 years old. The picture tube is a little rough, but it plays. These newer sets are obsolete the day after they are set up. Something new is coming right away. There used to be a computer commercial showing a guy driving home with his newly purchased computer and seeing a billboard about the newer one coming out. None of the electronics today stays new for long. That is why I won't pay for top of the line. But, cars are like that, too. Once you sign on the dotted line, the value of that car dropped a lot. You haven't even driven it off the lot. It's not the Q, it's all electronics no matter who sells it.

I agree with @GenXmuse

I never thought QVC got first run electronic items, including computers, cameras, etc.

I've read the specs, they don't seem like top of the line.

When you put out that much money you really have to do your homework & not fall for the hype or the price or the easy pay.

Our most expensive TV is an LG and it is the worst. It has a odd fading pattern over the left side of the screen, like a hazy fog is rolling in. ??? It is not even used a lot as we do not watch TV a lot.

I also had a terrible experience with an LG phone that I loved, until it stopped working one day. There was a manufacturing flaw. I understand these things happen, but LG customer service was like 'oh well' You can send it back to us we can repair it and send it back to you, good luck. Of course I had to rush out a get a new phone at $700 a phone now-a-days I was not happy.

PS Run far away from LG applicances!!!

Agreed. No QVC electronics for me.

I am buying a new TV this week. I researched TV's and their specs and prices extensively and It's Best Buy for me. Easy Pay is what draws buyers to the Q, as well as delivery, which is often "free" on high ticket or TSV electronics. Even many Costco TVs were older models.

Expect nothing to last today and you will not be disappointed.

I have to admit i usually avoid LG products...over the years i have heard negative things about a variety of their products......we always buy SONY tv's...so far so good

before that we used to buy on Zenith tv's ...they were

workhorses!!

LG is not alone....the same thing used to happen to Samsung....they'd last 5 yrs if you were lucky due to capacitator problems....Samsung made some adjustment to correct the problem a bit, but they still dont last very long.....

Service staff at a electronics discount retailer as well as a technician at a repair service told Tom's Guide website that the average LCD TV from any major brand, including Toshiba, Sony, Samsung, or Philips, is built to last "just about three to four years" when used for about five hours per day. Some TVs may last longer, but it is a matter of luck to find such a TV........

While I agree regarding LG (we don't even have service personnel for LG in our town!!), I don't think these newer smart TV's last anywhere near as long as they should! And QVC is notorious for selling models that will soon be obsolete or at least models that will soon be taken out of the stores to make room for new state of the art.

I learned my lesson when I bought my 'original size' Apple iPad..... I still love it but had no idea it was being phased out for a smaller version.

Spurt: Wow, thank you SO much! Now I wish I hadn't purchased a new LED TV today. I didn't realize this was a common problem with LED tv's. Bummer! What's a person to do nowadays?
