Manners....please!

I don't know who taught some of these hosts their manners, but I suspect they've forgotten most of them. I was looking at an item that I was interested in and the host and vendor were both talking at the same time, and each getting louder and louder. I couldn't focus on either one so I gave up and changed the channel. Sale lost. Is their narcissism more important than the give and take of a civil conversation about the item? This anxiety producing, frenetic need to be the center of attention has cost more than a few sales from me. Could they be instructed to let the vendor speak, then give the required information, then turn it back over to the vendor who best knows the product/item.

I agree with OP. However, my guess is they are trying to amp up the enthusiasm for the product and doing what they are told.

I was watching a presentation with Jimmy Coco on his Hollywood Tan product and he had just said, I have a great a little secret and great tip on using the product, and was JUST ABOUT to share his information, when the host interrupted to let us know how the product was selling and give us other useless information. She never let him get back to the great tip we would have preferred to hear. A great host would have brought him back to the tip he was about to share, if indeed someone was feeding info into her ear that she needed to immediately provide the viewers!

And, on a side note, that would be a great questions for hosts to ask guest presenters for certain products... Do you have any tips to share with our viewers?

After all the complaining we do on this subject, wouldn't you think the PTB would wise up and realize that we do not want to be yelled at by the hosts and vendors. They act like we don't have a brain and also, all their hijinks do not make us buy. I agree completely w/the OP.

When my girls were growing up I always told them to NEVER tell someone to 'shut up'.

However, since I'm now old (and live with just my cats) I find myself yelling that more and more to the TV.

My poor cats run for the hills because I'm yelling, "Please shut up so I can hear what they have to say". (At least I say, "PLEASE"! )

I spend so much time trying to avoid the news I end up watching game shows and QVC and HSN.

What's my point? Well, my point is I end up just as frustrated watching QVC and HSN because (for some reason) the people who are supposed to 'listen' feel they MUST get their bla bla in at the same time.

Who's fault is it? I don't know! Is it the fault of the host or is it the fault of the person TALKING INTO the ear of the host?

So, I'm wondering where do I go now? I can't stand these people all talking at once....I can't stand the news (I don't care who's sleeping with who...if I did I'd watch trash shows.

Guess I'll get out some of the books I've been meaning to read but never got around to it. Think of the money I'll save.......

@CalminHeart. I think you hit the nail on the head. I'm sure they are doing exactly as they are told. It seems when the ramped up enthusiasm is displayed, sales go up. That is the bottom line for a company.

There is an entire study done on language and sound manipulation called NLP or neuro linguistics programming. It is a fascinating read and is now being used in all circles such as Politics, sales, academia etc. Sometimes, I turn off the sound and just read the captions. After reading a bit about it you may never look at sales presentations the same again. And, all the posters are correct, it is done to ramp up sales.

The hosts are told to do this by the powers that be. Most of the younger hosts speak in a pretty excited manner, ramped up, etc. Why do some think they are just ignoring what the consumer wants to hear? They are doing exactly what has been proven to sell period. Annoying to some or not, I wouldn't blame the hosts. It won't change.

Well, again, the "ramped up enthusiasm", "neuro linguistics" or whatever, the problem whoever the powers that be don't get, is that their interpretation of "enthusiasm" whether on the news, on ads, on shopping channels, is not translating to their viewers as "enthusiasm", rather its many turning the channel or turning it all off, or yelling shut up and other choice invectives at the t.v. or however we are watching.

They needed to go back to the drawing board decades ago to "ramp up sales", instead of making a lot of us feel like anxious nervous wrecks from watching these play-acting yelling antics!

And that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it!🤪 😵

I'd been bothered somewhat by the same thing -- talking over each other. Love all the hosts but some HAVE to interrupt - and ALL continue to tell us how many thousands have been ordered - and WE DON'T CARE! We're not at a county fair listening to a hawker selling mops!!

Yes. That's exactly it. Talking over each other in any venue has always annoyed me, but on a shopping channel it's pretty easy to just go online. I do that no matter what the sales hype is so I can read reviews and product info before ordering. No biggie.

I agree on the manners. But it seems that they really dont care about the sales otherwise they would be doing something about it. I also feel like if you dont let the host know then they think its ok to do it again becausethey think it doesnt offend anyone.

One question - why can some hosts manage to speak clearly and slowly, not interrupt the vendors, and manage the ear piece? I encourage viewers to watch Katie McGee, IMO, she is flawless and a newbie, at that. It can be done, she is proof.

I agree!!! This style of "rampping up enthusiasm" does not make me watch or buy!! In fact, it has the opposite effect on me. Talking loudly, speed talking, talking over another or constantly yucking it up makes me grab the channel clicker!!!

It's the way you shop, not may people shot ONLY on what they are saying on the tv now. I don't anyone who does that. Most of us have our laptops or tablets open as we watch and we can easily check for the details online. Things that the hosts and vendors don't even mention now. I think because they assume if we need more information or just don't want to follow their blah blah blah, we'll look it up. It's not a lack of manners by any stretch of the imagination. They aren't socializing ..... they selling stuff.

I know nothing about this NLP but I have common sense and it's no brainer that they talk loud to get our attention. They talk loud to get us to perk up and look at the tv and hopefully be drawn into whatever they are selling. It's why commercials are always so much louder than the tv programs. Shopping channel hosts repeat the things they want to tell us which isn't necessarily want we want to know. And that's ok because today's shoppers are savvy enough to go online and read the specs themselves. It's why I watch shopping channels on mute. If I like something or if I'm curious, I listen to the first few minutes and when they go into repeition, I mute the tv and read the specs online.

I totally agree with what you are saying....there was another product being demonstrated I think it was a kitchen gadget that I'd never seen before.....just when the vendor was about to make an important point....the host interrupted the vendor to go through the colors for the UMPTEENTH TIME (they had already gone through colors so much I could have recited them for them)....It's just ridiculous.....and then they wonder why they get so many returns when the only info they seem to give these days are colors, or pat themselves on the back for how many have been sold. Maybe they would sell MORE if they gave the vendor time to provide important information .....
