Sorry for your pain. I had to have a tooth re root caneled (if there is such a word) several years ago. The dentist didn't see a root and I guess he missed it. Anyway, even though most of the roots were dead it hurt just as much the second time as it did the first time. Sorry to tell you this. That is the only root canal I have ever heard that actually hurt.

I hope you feel better soon. If you have a jar of cloves ,you might try putting one next to the spot that hurts. Oil of cloves is supposed to stop a toothache

I know a whole clove isn't the same thing as oil, but it never hurts to try things

Once the abcess in that tooth flared up again (after the root canal), my dentist sent me to an oral surgeon to have the procedure memem described above (called an apioectomy). The oral surgeon performed the procedure with lots of novacaine. My husband had to go with me to the appointment because I was sent home holding an ice pack up to my mouth afterwards, so I couldn't drive. There was no pain except for some canker sores that formed around my stitches, which could have been avoided if I'd rinsed my mouth with Peroxyl each night until the stitches were removed. That was close to 30 years ago and I've never had a problem with that tooth since.

Thanks everyone who posted! I am home, still numb from all the novicane. I went to the endodontist who did my other root canals. He said by the X-ray it looked like the tooth bothering me was the molar behind the previous root canal molar. I go back in a week and have it finished. I just pray it was this tooth and not a different one. Sometimes it is obvious what tooth it is....sometimes it is hard to pin point. I will let you know how I feel tomorrow once the novicane is worn off. Have a great night all!

UPDATE. Good Morning. I feel SO MUCH BETTER TODAY!!! He must have got the right tooth! I could drink my hot chocolate almond milk today with out PAIN . I just feel better. My ear ache went away, my throat is not painful anymore. I am on antibiotics for a week, and will be back to see him next Wednesday to finish the job and seal the tooth up permanent.

@Poodlepet2 Yes, I am so thankful for having dental insurance that covers 80%. Last year with two root canals and other work I ran out of benefits and had to pay out of pocket. I am just so grateful for dentists and doctors that do what they do no matter what they charge. What would we do with out these wonderful people who help us feel better?

I wish everyone had dental care as a given. I would pay higher taxes to cover this need that is NOT BEING MET AT ALL..... Not just pulling out teeth as so many people are subjected to when they do not have the means to have dental care. We need help in this area of medical for everyone.

Just got to this thread and I'm glad to hear it worked out and you're feeling better. :-)

I'm also glad to hear you saw an endodontist, who specializes in root canals, rather than a general dentist. It's unusual that a general dentist is experienced enough to handle root canals properly, especially in 3-rooted molars.

Just to put this out there for others.... sometimes post-root canal pain can be a result of a root that has fragmented, leaving a fragment behind. This would be evident on x-ray.

Bottom line is, it's always best to preserved one's natural teeth rather than having them pulled. A root canal preserves the tooth structure -- the only difference being that the root has now been filled with an inert material. Having the root in the jaw, as opposed to a pulled tooth where the root is removed as well, is better for bone level and integrity in the jaw, to put it simply.
