I do use AZO as soon as a UTI starts and also find it very helpful. It is like the old fashioned pyridium and does work fast. However, it doesn't cure the UTI, just lessens the symptoms, as has been said.

The first med the doc put me on was macrobid, two a day for seven days. I got really sick after the fourth capsule and called the doc. However, it seemed as though the UTI was gone. But not two weeks later it came back. She then gave me bactrim and that has seemed to work, but I don't trust it not to come back.

Yesterday her office called me and said the labs finally came back from the first UTI and she thinks I am on the wrong kind of bactrim. Now I wait and see if it comes back again. If it does, I'll probably have to provide another sample and in the meantime take AZO until she finds out what kind of bacteria I keep getting.

I've always had UTIs, but they have never been so hard to diagnose and cure before. I attribute it to my age and minimal immune response.

Hi, I needed to take prophylactic antibiotics at 3 months at a time. It really helped because I was getting frequent infections with klebsiella pneumonia. Like yourself, I think it is a weakened immune system.

Happy Belated Birthday!!! Hope after you feel a little better you and your girls can celebrate.

I get them frequently too. The last one I had took 3 rounds of antibiotic to get rid of. I can't take Bactrim. I had a bad reaction to it once. They are very frustrating!

I use D'Mannose. It works fast and unless you have an infection requiring antibiotics it will take care of it.

The bacteria that causes cystitis and bladder infections have finger-like projections on their surface which manage to attach to the bladder lining causing irritation. D-Mannose is able to rid the bladder of these bacteria because when the urine is saturated with D-mannose, bacteria are preferentially attracted to the D-mannose, over and above your bladder lining. Once they have formed a complex, the bacteria are then passes out with the D-mannose in the urine.

It comes in loose powder you mix into water or you can buy it in filled capsules. It is a derivative of sugar but will not harm diabetics.

It is fine for long term use with no repercussions. Children to the elderly, even pets now as vets are finding how well it works.

My experience/recommendation:

Natural Factors CranRich
or
Andrew Lessman Cranberry Benefits

One pill in AM, one pill in PM; every day (not just when you feel a UTI attack coming on); for the rest of your life, like brushing your teeth

D-mannose (which is the derivative of cranberry) was not effective for me or my friends who suffer. These pills work for us. It could take a couple of days to feel the effects.

The cranberry extract prevents the bacteria adhering to the cells lining the urinary tract. If you already have a UTI, take your prescribed antibiotics and the pills at the same time and continue with the pills forever. This should prevent future infections. Obviously, ask you doctor about any contraindications for you.

ETA: @esmeraldagooch

You explained how it works as I was typing, apparently.

“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears.
Another vote for Andrew Lessman's Cranberry Vitamins. I was getting UTI's every few months and taking these daily has finally stopped them (haven't had one in years). Like a previous person posted, you take these daily to prevent them, not just when you have an infection.
