So, I have had the worst week of my life. Monday I found out my sewer line was broken and was quoted $4,000 to fix (found someone to fix for $650). Yesterday he came out and worked all day and got it fixed. Around 4:00 I took the dogs for a walk on the street since the backyard was such a mess. I suddenly got stomach cramps like I had to run to the bathroom, but it subsided a couple minutes later. Took the dogs in, went out to pay the man fixing my sewer line, went inside, fed dogs and suddenly I was in the worst pain I have felt since I had shingles. Instant excruciating pain. I went and laid on bed, first on my stomach, then back, then side, couldn't get comfortable. Was moaning outloud I was in such pain. I thought my appendix had burst, but it was on my left side and left back. The pain got more intense and I called my neighbor but she didn't answer. I barely made my way over to her house and told her to call 911. She later told me I was white as a ghost and clammy. I was diagnosed with a kidney stone. I haven't passed it yet. Have you had one and how long did it take you to pass it? They sent me home with pain meds and that was about it. So far today I feel fine. It hasn't made it into my bladder yet, it is at the "intersection". Thanks for all your help!

I have a predisposition for kidney stones so I know how excruciatingly painful they are!! I'd do childbirth over a kidney stone any time!! I was hospitalized for 3 days during the 5th month of my second pregnancy and monitored by a urologist for the remainder of my pregnancy. I was able to take Tylenol with Codeine for the pain. After I gave birth, I was sent for a scan and the kidney stone was still there 😯 It was large (about 1.5 cm.) and in a place where the urologist was a little uncomfortable about me undergoing lithotripsy so I was scheduled for a ureteroscopy. It was a fairly easy out-patient procedure. I have had them off and on for 25 years now. They usually pass on their own but I did undergo another ureteroscopy about 10 years ago. The ER should have given you a strainer to use so you would see the kidney stone when it passed and recommended following up with a urologist. I hope this helps and good luck!

I can sympathize with you. I had a kidney stone years ago. Went to my doctor when I first started dealing with the pain-she said it wasn't anything to be concerned about. The pain worsened over the next few days. I remember the pain being worse than childbirth!! I also remember crawling upstairs to my daughter's bedroom in the middle of the night and asking her to drive me to the hospital. She looked at the clock and said, "Can't you wait until the morning!" Ummmm..no!! Needless to say I fired my doctor. Feel better soon!

I have never had a kidney stone, but my husband has passed several. As I understand it, the pain you feel is because the stone is moving; no pain means the stone is settled for the time being.

The pain medication will help greatly with what ranges from discomfort, to quite intense, to "what level of Hell is this" ------as you have already experienced. From the time my husband experienced the first round of intense pain and gotten his diagnosis, he has passed the stone(s) anywhere from 2 days to almost 2 full weeks. Drink a lot of fluids and walk as much as you can. My husband was told to try to hold his urine until his bladder was full, so that when he went, his stream was strong and forceful to help flush the stone out. Hopefully you were told to seek medical attention if you find yourself unable to "go" at all, which could mean the stone has totally blocked the opening, and requires immediate attention to avoid damage to the kidneys, bladder, ureters, etc.

Because of his history of multiple stones, husband was to use a disposable strainer every time he went, to filter his urine and catch the stone when it passed. It never failed that if he used the strainer 3x without finding a stone, he wouldn't use the strainer on the 4th trip, and that was always when he passed it! He agreed to collect his urine at one point to have analysis done, which pinpointed the type of stones he forms, and what foods to avoid to lessen the problem.

My very best wishes to you in passing this stone easily and quickly.

I have an extensive history of kidney stones that started shortly after I completed menopause 11 years ago.
It started much like OP's. Severe low back pain that radiated from my left side. I never had children so I cannot compare it to labor pain. I walked the floors, laid in bed, cried, etc. Then, 10-12 hours later I had the dry heaves. Then I urinated, passed the stone and was like brand new!
Six months later, the same thing... exactly the same. After that episode I saw the urologist who did a cystoscopy in his office. Nothing.
I had these every 6 months until a year ago. Coincidentally I had a CT of the abdomen which showed 3 small stoning the left kidney and 1 large one on the right kidney. The urologist suggested a lithotripsy which I am postponing because I have a thing about general anesthesia.
Until 6 weeks ago, I had blood in my urine that I thought was from Xeralto. It turns out bits of stones were leaving my body.
New information says cranberry juice does not help. I was never a big pop drinker but I quit drinking brown pop almost 2 years ago. I believe that helps. I only drink water and diet cranberry juice or lemonade.
Good luck OP.

I had a kidney stone many years ago that got stuck and couldn't pass. I had lithotripsy and that experience wasn't pretty. I immediately started drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day and I have not had another one since. I feel for you. If you don't pass it soon, see a urologist as soon as possible.

I had bilateral stones - one in each kidney - when I was 19.

Took a few days to pass them, if I remember correctly.

Never found out what type they were, but as I developed hypercalcemia at age 43, it makes me wonder if they were calcium buggers.

My poor mom had kidney stones four times before doctors found out what type they were (uric acid).

Once this info is dscovered, it becomes one of the keys in helping to prevent future stones.

Hope you feel better soon and good luck.

I have had lithotripsey (didn't help me) I don't have any pain ever really I get nauseous and tons of blood in my urine. I have had them in both kidneys.

I had to have surgery where he cut a stone in 3 pieces to get it out of the uretor and small ones out of the kidney I think.

It was a 9 mm I wonder why I never have pain? I worry more will come and I won't know.

i have a great uro so that is good.

they are draining even with no pain I can't imagine the horrid pain.

i had ct scans to see them. Id not waste time on much else.

they suck!

MaryJo Ut.

I've had my share of kidney stones and the latest episode was a month ago. I am what the doctor's call a chronic stone former. This last kidney stone was almost 3" long. No, I didn't pass it, it was too big for it to move, I had it lasered about 3 weeks ago and had a stent put in to help pass the fragments. To make a long story shorter, after the urologist removed the stent 10 days later, I got an infection. I had several CT scans as I ended up in the ER and was admitted to the hospital with sepsis. After 6 days in the hospital I finally was sent home with more antibiotics. It took forever it seemed for them to find the right antibiotic to kill the bacteria.

Kidney stones are serious and in my past, when I was pregnant with my 2nd child at 7 months I had 9 stones and passed them in the hospital. It was like having 9 children. I was in ICU and isolation and developed a staph infection. So I know kidney stones. This last bout with this big stone was found when I was pregnant with my last child 31 years ago. That small stone they seen in my right kidney never gave me any trouble, but grew to 3" over a 31 year period. That stone sat there all that time. I had no pain, but a lot of blood in my urine since the first of Sept. So obviously I was thinking of cancer. Stones mean pain, and this one didn't have pain. It was too big to move, but I was afraid it would start breaking off and then the misery would have started. That is why I decided to have it lasered.

I go back to the urologist next Thursday for an x-ray to make sure the fragments are gone. I also have a cyst on both kidneys, but they don't do much with them unless you are having a lot of back pain. My left kdiney doesn't have or never has had stones, but he said there is a "spot" on the kidney. I hope it is nothing, but a blood fragment or something.

Good Luck to all the people out there who have had stones or who are dealing with them. Don't wait around, get into the Urologist and take care of them. I just about didn't make it. Unbelievable what a stone made up of calcium can do, no matter what the size of it is.

I am wondering what other symptoms have accompanied others with stones or kidney infections.I too have had some experience with kidney stones but not since 1998 when I had lithotripsy. I have known for years that I have stones in both kidneys but my urologist suggested doing nothing as they were not traveling. I have not seen a urologist in 3 years which is when I had my last scan. He suggested that I just go about my life and monitor every few years with a scan . Friday I was having lower groin and flank pain along with nausea and chills. I went to my primary care and yes, no blood but leukocytes in my urine indicating an infection. I am on Cipro. Culture not back yet to confirm its the right antibiotic. I am not in pain as long as I am laying in bed. Just a minimal discomfort in the right groin. I am nauseous, have the chills on and off, no fever, able to urinate without pain other than feel a little discomfort in the area of my right ureter. The doctor suspects it's just a kidney infection. I had symptoms of the start of a bladder issue 2 weeks ago but I upped my water intake and my d mannose in addition to limiting my exercise to walking. She thinks I had a bladder infection that went to my kidney .

If i stand for more than 5 minutes the pelvic pain is intense. Actually feel clear back to my

right buttocks. Today I attempted to cook my own breakfast and almost fainted, I became very light headed. The fact that I can find a position in bed that relieves the pain makes me think I have a stone lodged and or traveling. Thoughts.

@feline groovy, just found your post..interesting about your Mom's kidney stones. My husband had 1-2 renal stones every year in his 40's..he eventually changed Drs & the new Dr suggested a 24 hour urine collection to check it out..sure enough his Uric acid level was 4x normal..he started him on Allopurinol, once daily, & never another stone..it is a old, cheap generic drug & my husband never misses a dose!
