So embarrassed!

I was visiting with two friends today at one of their homes. We were going thru things in her basement and she was carrying a large container of crafts. I worried she was having to hold it too long and tried to back out of her way. I tripped on some wood boards that were on the floor behind me. I stumbled backward and tried to catch myself. My friend tried to catch me, thank heavens! She slowed my twirling fall enough that when my body introduced itself to the floor I did not land with a thud but a mere "bump"! Unfortunately, my pirouetting fall included a major twist of my right ankle (the same foot I broke 4 years ago). We stayed and visited nearly an hour more. When I returned home and actually looked at my foot, I had a baseball sized egg on my ankle! It was huge! So, 6 hours and 5 X-rays later, I am getting reacquainted with crutches! Thank goodness my house is a ranch as " although no fracture is evident we can't rule out the possibility that it didn't show up on the X-rays.". Now, I do have 3 small stairs to get into the front door, which were quite entertaining for the neighbors as my ds practically was carrying me up, but once level I was doing pretty well. Bad news, I am non weight bearing again! Last time was 6 months. I pray this will be a matter of days! Fortunately, all my shopping is finished, but I need to wrap it all, put up 2 trees and bake! The last time was at Christmas as well. Yikes! The most painful part was how embarrassed I was sitting on the basement floor with two friends worried I was injured! It was mostly my pride that was injured at the time but now I will feel the pain of days ticking off closer to Christmas with fewer things getting accomplished!

Many times, especially when swelling is involved, X-rays are not conclusive.

I personally prefer broken bones to a sprained joint. But, that's just me.

Embarrassed? My wife went to the ER when she fell and they took an X-ray. It came back as negative, no break.

She fell on concrete and injures her elbow. ER says no fracture. Fortunately, 2 of my friends are Sports Medicine Orthopedic Surgeons. After the pain not getting better, she came to one of my Adult Hockey League games.

The Ortho doctor made just one movement and told her she had a broken radial head bone in her elbow. She went to his office the next day, took another X-ray, and sure enough, it was easy to see the fracture. Took months to completely heal.

I was on crutches for over a year for a leg injury that required surgery. No bones broken, but a puck hit my leg and ended up with a bleeding blood vessel and only solution was surgery/stay off my feet/Ice and elevation. Couldn't run/skate/use my recumbent bike, or even walk more than 3 minutes on my treadmill. Took 18 months to get over that one.

Hopefully you get your family to help you when it need it, and I am hoping that you get more mobility sooner than you did with you other incident.

My best to you.

hckynut(john)

@Mmsfoxxie. I like how you think! To all my well-wishers, I thank you so much! I see an ortho doc tomorrow morning! Hopefully she will let me put weight on it, at least a little! ER doc put a strange splint on. It was a large, wet gauze-like wrap that got warm then hardened. I was told NOT to put any weight on it until ortho sees me.

As for the friends...I need to explain a little. The woman at who's home I fell is more of a good acquaintance. She has never seemed to like me, but when I needed a ride, I asked the other gal who was riding with first one. First gal agreed to give me a ride as well. The second gal used to be my bff. She stabbed me in the back a few years ago and said she was sorry I was hurt but not sorry for what she had done. We didn't speak for over a year, but I couldn't stand seeing her daily (we go to a group thing together) so I tried to make up. It just never was the same, tho. That's why I was embarrassed! The worst part is, I didn't really want to be there to begin with but was trying to be friendly! Anyway, I really thank you for all you good wishes! I'll let you know when I hear more! 😘

Bummer.... It would be bad any time of the year, but it's particularly bad to be hobbling around on crutches at this time of the year. You can't do anything about it now. Perhaps your friend will help you out a bit since the accident happened in her basement.

@hckynut. I'm glad to hear you are finally crutch free! Thank you for the great advice! I'm so sorry your WD went through that. Where do you play hockey? I think I mentioned once my sil is a hockey nut, too! He played goalie for many years and apparently was quite good. I know he misses it. He wasn't an ice guy, tho. I think it was called street hockey. Where are you located? ( I'm not prying and you needent be specific) I would love to find a way for him to play again! He and my ds have season tickets to Devils. My ds loves it, too, but also is a big Red Bull's soccer fan!

I hope you are doing well without crutches. I had a lisfranc fracture four years ago and was in serious trouble for over two years! I needed surgery and was not a candidate for it as I'm allergic to most metals! Thanks for caring and the great advice! Hope you and your wife are doing well!

@Imadickens

Thank you for caring. My injury was many years ago, but for an active person like myself, that no running, no skating for 18 months was an eternity. As far as hockey, I started playing as a young boy growing up in Public Housing Projects. My mother raised myself and my 3 older sisters by herself.

We made our on hockey sticks out of scrap wood given us from a store that built furniture about half mile from our Projects apartment. We played with a ball on the asphalt plaza outside our apartments. Couldn't afford skates until I started my paper route at age 8, and was able to pay for them.

I started my own Adult Hockey League in our city. It was primarily because there was only 1 Amateur League, and it was run by kind of a clique. They grew up playing on ice and me and my friends did not, so they deemed we were not good enough to play.

Started that and ran it all by myself, nothing delegated, run by only me. That was for 52 years. During that time most of the players were men over 50 years old, many that had never played before. My oldest player was 78 when he moved out of town.

I also helped start a World Wide Adult League in the early 1990's. At that time there was just my Adult League and the other I mentioned above. It added another 12 teams of Adult Hockey in our City. It had a Beginners and Intermediate Leagues.

The Beginners League had many 20-30 year old men and women that had never even skated? They had 8 weeks of teaching, by a former NHL player, and myself. Then they would play 16 games after that time. I was the Referee in most of those games, along with running and being the Ref in my own League's games. I played for several decades and also was a Referee for over 30 years.

There are now 5 Adult Hockey Leagues in our city, all different levels from beginners and all the way up to former College players and some former Pro players. A place for all adults to play at a level matching their skills? Age was/has nor will ever be a factor to any adult in our city that wants to play hockey. Also many Youth Hockey Leagues in our city.

I was honored by our city's Hockey Hall of Fame back in 2005 for my work at making Adult Hockey Leagues available for all Adults of all skill levels. Now this Hall of Fame has greats like the late Gordie Howe(MR.HOCKEY)/Terry Sawchuck(held the record for most Goalie NHL wins for many decades), and Coach Scotty Bowman(who has won more Stanley Cup Rings than any NHL Coach), who all started their Professional careers, here in our city in Nebraska. I was/am truly humbled to have my name on an award given me by the same organizations as these Greats of National Hockey League Fame.

Sounds like your son lives on the East Coast if his team is the Devils. Course mine is the NY Rangers and I am in Nebraska. If there are no Adult Leagues where you son lives? Have him read this post of how I went about making a place for myself and many thousands of other men and woman to play the game most of them love. Not easy, as I was also working my regular job at Western Electric/AT&T most of those many years.

A very long post, but hey, I love my life of hockey. Be careful now with that injury. One can never ice and elevate too much every day, especially if you spend much time upright. Blood flows to that area and it does cause swelling?

My best to you and to your son finding a place to play,

hckynut(john)
