I've had it twice, once in each thumb. Hand doctor wanted to do surgery. I opted for physical therapy and it worked perfectly! No more problem.

Mine was caused by picking up my grandbabies. And, I'm hypothyroid, so I'm prone to tendon and ligament issues.

The key is to find a PT who specializes in hand treatment.

This time I have it in my pinkie and since I am left handed it is hurting more especially trying to open something. Tomorrow I am going to the doctor for one of my usual visits and will ask him but just wondering if you have had them and what have you fouond out.

My husband recently had his left hand operated on for carpal tunnel and trigger finger in the pinky finger. Carpal tunnel was a success but not the trigger finger. It still sticks and now occasionally the thumb sticks. My nephew also had both surgeries and his trigger finger is still sticky. TF is painful and surgeon said it comes from repetitive movements. Before you consider surgery, see if your doctor will consider physical therapy.

@halfpint1 -

I had trigger thumb. My doctor said it would just get worse unless I had surgery. He was working on getting authorization for me to have trigger thumb surgery when I learned about a connection between problems like trigger finger/thumb and CTS and Vitamin B-6 deficiency. There is even a book about it.

I canceled the surgery & started supplementing with Vitamin B-6 - my thumb never locked on me again after I started taking it & my range of motion gradually improved. I have no limitations when using my hand anymore.

In my case, TF is associated with arthritis in my hands.....cortisone shot, which was very painful, was not effective.....

I posted many months ago here about my trigger thumb problems asking for advice. I got a cortisone shot, and wore a splint night and day to immobilize the thumb for a week or two...can't remember now how long. Doctor said if it was not better after a month to come back for surgery. I just waited it out, and I've continued all along to wear the splint at night. It's been many months now but my thumb is totally back to normal. I absolutely think my issue was from overuse.

I have had trigger finger in my thumb, and middle finger. In my case, I was holding a tablet a lot, and when I bought an e reader pyramid where I could lay the tablet my trigger fingers went away. If you do any repetitive motions, stop, and see if it clears up.
