My husband tore his meniscus when we were running to catch a train in France. Fortunately, we found an orthopedic clinic near our Paris hotel where I took my husband. I speak French so we had a great advantage. They took x-rays and gave us a diagnosis. When we returned to the US my husband had laparoscopic surgery on his knee. All went well.

The surgery will take no time at all, barely a scar (or 3 tiny 'x'). They'll make sure you feel well afterwards and send you home with your driver. You'll be amazed at how great you'll feel afterwards. Recoup'g a few weeks afterwards, maybe a little PT too.

Really no big deal, feel great afterwards.

I've had a meniscus tear both knees, post surgery crutches, PT, pain meds, full recovery within 6 weeks. If the surgery is warrented, follow the MD orders for physical therapy which is very important in your recovery. I ended up having a total knee replacement on the left after a few years but doing well, right kinee is fine ( surgery about 20 years ago). Good luck to you.

I had two tears in the same knee. I had the ortho surgeon that I used to work for perform the arthroscopy after x-rays and an MRI. Tears are not seen on x-rays but that's how any reputable surgeon will evaluate you.

In fact, when he saw me in the recovery room, he said that he cleaned out a lot of arthritis that did not show up on x-rays or MRI.

Of note ~ my recovery would have been so much easier but when having an arthrosocopy, a tourniquet is placed above your knee, on your thigh so the surgeon can get a good picture of the knee. The surgical nurse who applied mine made it so tight, not only did I have bruising for well over a month but I sustained nerve damage.

I told the office nurse and the doctor and the nurse said that I was the second patient in two weeks that complained of the same problem with the severe pain and bruising.

Normally, recovery is fairly quick. I truly suffered a lot. Now, all I have is stiffness but that has nothing to do with the meniscectomy.

Good luck ~ you will do fine!

One of my best friends is a Sports Medicine Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, and he specializes in knee and hip replacements and repair. I have talked with him about knee issues, and he also has done meniscus repair on at least 4 of the hockey players in my adult league.

Unless you have some type of abnormal meniscus problem, it is about the easiest surgery a person could have on any joint issue. The hockey players missed only 1, some maybe 2 weekly hockey games, their rehab was very quick for them.

Like any other surgery or medical procedure, the better physical health and fitness of the patient makes a big difference in full recovery time.

I had Patella Tendonitis and I could not skate/run or use my elliptical for almost 4 months, and that did not need surgery. Just 3 times a week of Physical Therapy, along with Biofeedback and lot's of hours with specific exercises at home. Was not a fun time for me.

What made you think you need meniscus repair?

I had one several months ago and had arthroscopic surgery. A tear won't show on xrays so an MRI is needed. It's my understandinrg that if you are over 40 and not a pro sports player they do not repair it but just trim it up and clean the area out which is what I had done. It was a short simple surgery and I had no real pain - just soreness and stiffness. You can put weight on it immediately but used a crutch for only about 3 days. PT is the most important part and doing exercises daily. I started PT the next day. I had a lot of swelling and still have some stiffness and swelling 4 months later but I swell after injuries ideopathically. The swelling caused me to have extra PT but I have full use and it is stable with no pain.

I had the surgery (2 weeks before I had a big toe nail removed - rough month).

I didn't think the surgery, was so bad.

You might have to do therapy soon after.

To me, that was more painful.

Get yourself a walker, and cane - at Goodwill.

Put tennis balls on the bottom of the walker - feet.

It will make it move a lot easier.

Jean
