Walking especially if you are recovering. You can vary by distance and or hills to make it more difficult. That can really get you going on your way to even more cardio in the future.

Her workouts are gentle but effective. I love her! They have beautiful scenery and nicei music, too.

It's difficult to suggest not knowing what you are recovering from, your previous fitness level, experience, etc. Your doctor should have been the one to recommend specific exercises based on the above.

From the little we know, I'd suggest walking, stationary bike, and perhaps 3 lb. weights to work your upper body and do slight squats with. This type of cross-training is ultimately what you should aim for rather than walking exclusively.

It was pneumonia .... thankfully a light case. For 70 y/o was not in bad shape ...walked, pilates but it is very easy to lose stamina as you get older .... had a couple of months of little activity.

They are incredibly gentle- no impact at all - and you can vary your pace, etc. You also engage your upper body and arms- if you want. The treadmill often left my lower back tight as you are hitting the floor of the tread mill which has no give. Good luck!

I have posted several times recently about the Miracle Miles 5-DVD set with chainlink resistance band by Leslie Sansone. Sold out on QVC, they are available for the same $39 at Walkathome.com. Each DVD is for 1,2,3,4,or 5 miles and involves no floor exercises. You stand upright and as long as you can take 4 steps forward / backward or 2 steps to either side, you can do Leslie Sansone's new program without moving furniture.

I have been doing the 4-mile DVD for over four weeks. I do it in a long tank dress and sneakers in my home. I also have an excellent elliptical machine which I do not use. The DVD's got me results.

Results as noted by my doctor at my physical two weeks ago: weight loss, midriff reduction, and lowered blood pressure from 120/80 to 106/76. She is getting them for herself !

I never sweat during my 1200+ workouts at Curves: with Miracle Miles I sweat. It is very important to drink water during and after to keep hydrated so your sodium level doesn't increase.

I am not involved with marketing the DVD's, just a very happy user who is also improving her health and muscle tone.

Much success in whichever exercise program you use.

@ellaphant@BHawk, I second the recommendation to look at ellipticals. My doctor told me when I hit my 50’s to get rid of the treadmill and go for an elliptical. As @ellaphant said, it is low impact. The key is to find one with a stride you like. Any reputable sports equipment seller will let you try one out several times before you buy. Good luck! LM

@BHawk,

Walking is always good for anyone, any age. If you have access to a swimming pool then swim!

To build strength in your lower body try doing squats if you are able and make sure you are doing them correctly so as to not do harm. Google youtube for squats.

Pick up a few hand weights/ wrist weights and use them while doing other exercises.
