http://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/video/average-age-for-deadliest-type-of-heart-attack-getting-younger-study-651827267623

"Every 43 seconds someone in America has a heart attack and increasingly that person is younger. A new study from the Cleveland Clinic says the average age for the deadliest type of heart attack has dropped from 64 to 60 because alarmingly well known risk factors are on the rise including smoking, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes. Mistaken belief the pills can solve everything. "It is the false idea that taking medications for cholesterol and taking appropriate medication is enough and lifestyle changes are not required."

This NBC Nightly New report also highlighted Trisha, who was 95 lb overweight, developed diabetes, had heart bypass...but wasn't until she had 8 stents put in her heart that she got scared. She started exercising, adopted a Plant-Based diet, is no longer diabetic & from 13 pills a day to 1/2 pill.

Did you know that they are finding that alot of heart attacks are due to chronic inflammation due to diseases like RA, psoriasis, etc. This is especially true in younger patients and for patients that don't have an other risk factors.

When my husband was in the hospital, they had 4 heart attack victims come in that weekend- two under the age of 40 and two in their early 40's. They have never had that many young heart attack patients in a matter of a few days.

The heart is unfortunately not very forgiving. Through diet and exercsie you can only strengthen the card you've been dealt.

I've read that vegan diets can help reverse blockages and other issues (Dean Ornish) , your ldl needs to get super low. I eat very little red meat as it is, but I'm not ready to give up all meats!

@MaggieMack

I wanted to add this conversation about Jim Fixx to this thread, as well. I could write books on the ill effects of improper exercise....especially improper exercise with improper diet (read: Crossfit/Paleo craze).

---------

I loved that you brought up Jim Fixx. Yes, he did wonders for the exercise/running community. But it just clearly shows, you can't out-exercise a bad diet....or out-exercise a "everything in moderation" diet.

Fixx thought as long as you didn't smoke, you were good. Never was he quoted as a proponent of a plant based diet. At that time, plants were garnering lots of attention...if he was practicing a plant based diet, he was outspoken enough to say so....no mention.

Nathan Pritikin, a current day pioneer for the low fat plant message, wrote a book called 'Diet for Runners', with a chapter called "Run and Die on the American Diet" and Fixx had issues with the content & met with Pritikin. John Robbins wrote a short piece about their conversation:

"Jim Fixx thought that a healthy diet wasn’t that important. He believed that if you don’t smoke and if you exercise sufficiently, you are protected against heart disease.

Fixx knew that his father had died of a heart attack at age 43. But he believed that exercise (and the improved circulation it generates) would be an adequate defense. He thought that as long as he ran daily and didn’t smoke, he would stay healthy and avoid his father’s fate.

Jim didn’t just ignore expert advice that he needed to eat more healthfully. He went out of his way to forcefully criticize those who offered such advice. At the time, probably the world’s foremost advocate of eating a healthy diet as a means to open and heal clogged arteries was Nathan Pritikin. In his book titled Diet for Runners, Pritikin described a conversation he had with Jim Fixx:

Jim Fixx phoned me and criticized the chapter “Run and Die on the American Diet” in my book The Pritikin Promise. In that chapter, I said that many runners on the average American diet have died and will continue to drop dead during or shortly after long-distance events or training sessions. Jim thought the chapter was hysterical in tone and would frighten a lot of runners. I told him that was my intention. I hoped it would frighten them into changing their diets. I explained that I think it is better to be hysterical before someone dies than after. Too many men, I told Jim, had already died because they believed that anyone who could run a marathon in under four hours and who was a nonsmoker had absolute immunity from having a heart attack.

Sadly, only six months after this conversation, a passing motorcyclist discovered a man lying dead beside a road in northern Vermont. He was clad only in shorts and running shoes. The man was Jim Fixx."

I know of two vegans who I have known my entire life that had heart attacks at the age of 50 and 45 respectively. They also had very high triglycerides from a high starch diet. Both had to completely change their lifestyle and haven't had an incident since.

So what works for someone may not work for someone else..... and genetics play an enormous role. Just read Hockeynut's posts....healthy diet but his genetics play a part in why he had two heart attacks.

In addition, essential hypertension is not necessarily from a poor diet. Medications are life saving and eating a plant based diet will not necessarily result in giving up medication.

The starches they ate lead to high triglycerides, though, and when they stopped eatting just plants and starches their heart disease got better as proved by stress tests and angiograms. There are many stuides proving that a plant based diet is not the ONLY diet that changes the coronary arteries.

Both people had genetically inherited a pre-dispostion for heart disease and all the plants and no oils or fats wasn't changing that. In fact the vegan lifestyle nearly killed them.

If we destroy the Endothelium, we develop the disease.
If we restore our Endothelium, we vanquish our disease."

May be true but there are different ways of restoring the endothelim and to say otherwise ends up getting a doctor on Quackwatch. There is no such thing as a one size fits all diet. And if living on plants worked nobody would drop dead of heart disease.
