Diabetic question.....

My adult son may be diabetic. I chected his blood sugar this afternoon and it was 138. He had eaten lunch so I don't know if that number is anything to worry about. Is that 138 a high number? Thank you in advance for your comments.

This isn't meant to be sarcastic, but a doctor should check out your son. The blood sugar levels need to be tested over a period of time and done in a lab. Good luck!

Testing is after fasting for an accurate number. Not after just eating. A1C test is the test that your son needs to have if he's concerned.

If a Doctor is checking his glucose count, then he needs to call the Dr. Everybodies level changes all day everyday. If your sick, angry, just excercised, just ate, didn't eat. It changes and his Doctor would have given him numbers in a range.

Are you Diabetic? Is this how you happened to have the equipment to test or is it his? How old is he?--------tedEbear

Generally speaking you should wait for 2 hours before taking your or someone's blood sugar. At that time (2 hours after eating) it should be under 160 - 170. It will then drop down to a normal number. Normal is around 80 - 100 but blood sugars rise and fall all day and will rise with stress and illness as well as food (which is not covered as much as it should be nor understood as well as it should).....

I have higher fasting readings than I should because I have an anomoly that raises my sugars during my sleep. I am a stressful sleeper. That's were A1C readings come in handy (which are an average of 3 months readings).

If you are worried, call the doctor to arrange some blood work that will tell the doctor what his sugars are doing for 3 months. At that point he/she will have the information needed to help your son, or tell him he's doing fine.... good luck..

Btw, the numbers I gave in my post were given to me when I was diagnosed through Kaiser Permanente, I understand they may be stricter now.....

Diabetes cannot be diagnosed with a one time check of a persons blood sugar----unless that number is unusually high, as in 250+. A blood sugar of 138 after a meal is not high, but a 138 reading first thing in the morning is high.

Is your son losing weight without trying? Does he have an unquenchable thirst? Is he in and out of the bathroom every few minutes because he always feels the urge to pee? Is he overly tired? All of the above are diabetes warning signs.

If your son is concerned, I would schedule an appt with his doctor to have this checked. In the meantime, he should take his blood sugar as soon as he gets up every morning. Take his blood sugar 2 hours after every meal, and before he goes to bed. Write these numbers down and take them to the appt.

Two hours after eating, 2-H PP, is not considered a good time to check sugars unless you are a qualified person doing it for a reason. Get a doctor or lab to do this fasting and 2-H PP for comparative values.
