Poison Oak Remedy

I am sitting here with one eye nearly completely swollen shut, my hole face and neck swollen, with my fourth dose of poison oak, at least. I have had a worse dose of it before, but this is not a picnic. Anyway, I went looking for a remedy other than the usual, and this is what I found. There is much more to this article, if anyone wants to google it, but this is what I am doing, and I get two hours between treatment without itching.

What therapies does Dr. Weil recommend for poison oak?

The best treatment for poison oak is to run hot water on the affected areas, as hot as you can stand. This will seem counterintuitive, since heat increases the itching and cold soothes it. Under hot water the itching will briefly become very intense and then will stop for several hours, as if the nerves responsible for conveying the sensation to the brain become overloaded and quit. As soon as the itching starts again, go back to the hot water. If you do this conscientiously the whole reaction will complete itself quickly and your skin will return to normal much faster than it would otherwise.

Mousie I feel your pain. I have had poison ivy many, many times and also on my face and neck. I have always ended up on prednisone. I do, however, know exactly what you mean about the hot, hot water. It does work. Here's hoping for a short duration for you. Seems early so you must live somewhere south. I'm in MA. I also have to "knock on wood" as I haven't had it for a few years.

Hot showers always made me feel better. However, I found that heat would cause flare ups during the day, so I tried to keep the air conditioning cold as I could stand it. When I would get into a hot car, for example, the itching would become unbearable. I am extremely allergic and haven't been able to cure it on my own. I always ended up in the doctor's office for shot and meds. I hope you feel better soon, mousiegirl. I understand how miserable it can be.

If your face, neck and eye are swollen you need to see a doctor! It has become systemic.

Every incidence of Poison Ivy/Oak become more widespread because at this point the toxin is systemic, in the bloodstream into the body. The rash is no longer localized to initial contact with plant.

DH uses Tecnu if he knows he will be working outside where they might be poison oak, and we shower afterward, which is what I didn't do Monday, now wish I had. He also has a steroid cream which I have used, but I had to apply it frequently, and it is only supposed to be used three times a day, which is what prompted me to look up a natural remedy. The hot water gives me two-three hours of no itching, so that is a great improvement.

The rash is no longer localized to initial contact with plant.

I didn't even have contact with a plant, it was the oil on dead branches of a climbing rose that I was lopping off. A few years ago, I was doing the same thing with this rose, and came down with poison oak, so stayed clear. Last fall, DH sprayed the poison oak climbing through the rose to kill it, and it did die, but I guess the oil remained on the dead branches, and as I was happily lopping away, with my face looking upward, it all fell on my face and neck. I did, for a change, have a long sleeved top on, as it was early in the morning, so I was somewhat protected in certain areas for a while, but then took it off as the sun came out, so arms were not protected then. I think DH will just use the electric saw and just shear off the branches so we don't have to get too close.

Otherwise, I feel fine, have been outside all day gardening, functioning as usual, but I know it takes at least a few weeks to get over this, can't remember how long it took before.

On 4/1/2015 mousiegirl said:
On 4/1/2015 HiLo said:
The old fashioned Homeopathic remedy Rus Tox does the trick all the time. I was desperate till I discovered this remedy and was able to buy it from my local health store; within a couple of days I had so much relief, after a week poison ivy/oak was completely gone. If not available from local store can be bought on line for probably less than $6.00 and and it lasts "forever", I have recommended it to many and all got the same relief.

Hylands Homeopathic Products

HiLo, I have never heard of this, I will look into it, thank you.

I do hope you will look into this remedy, dear. Nothing cleared mine up including shots and I was losing time from work. When my car pool driver told me his "old school doctor" recommended this product I jumped on it. You just take the little pellets according to directions and in several hours I was feeling some relief. Kept on with the remedy and got more and more relief; it was gone completely in my case in 5 days. I also keep a topical remedy on hand as well to relieve the first signs of itching. Nobody I know has been disappointed as yet and the cost is so reasonable. Leftover pellets will last "forever" if kept in a dry, dark place. Too bad most people aren't aware that under the treatment of a good Homeopath there are a lot of ailments that can be not only helped but cured. I know as my life was once saved by a great Homeopath when there was nothing more medical science could do for me. This is one product you don't need a Homeopath to recommend, however.
