I've been eating the 5/2 way since last May and have lost 25 pounds since starting it. That is slow and steady, but being over 60 it's harder to lose weight than when you are younger. I eat very healthy (basically what you might call Paleo) and feel this was a good way to lose weight for me. I do the 2 days on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Is anyone doing the 5/2 diet? I'm trying to lose 10 or 15 lbs. before granddaughter's wedding in June & thought this way of eating might help. Two days a wk. eat 500 cals. & the other days, just eat normally.

That was last spring's fad diet. Oh, yes. I fell for the chatter. I bought the book. It's really not 500 cals for 2 days and eat what you want for 5. It's more like eat 500 cals for 2 (i.e. starve yourself) and then go on a normal diet for the remaining 5 days. I'm sure it works. And since you don't have much weight to lose, you are probably the type of person it would work best on. You would just have to be on it for a few weeks rather than several months. If you think you can do the 500 cals for two days (it's brutal), it's worth a try. But I suggest you buy one of the books (there are several on the market) because there are "rules" about what you can eat, when you can eat it.

That's very unhealthy to starve yourself for several days on 500 calories a day. I would faint on 500 calories a day.

The wedding isn't until June and you don't have much to lose. Do it the healthy way, and go to Weight Watchers. Healthy weight loss, you will look slim at the wedding and you won't compromise your health.

Good luck!

I guess you're right about eating healthy etc. I'll go to the gym a few times a week & just stop snacking at night....that way I can probably lose a few lbs. I had thought about eating salad at noon & then lite soup at night for supper..that along w/my a.m. coffee would probably be 500 calories. Not a very healthy way of eating... Haven't bought my dress yet, so I will keep you posted on my progress. Thanks for reading my post. :-)

From someone who's tried everything in the world (I'm now almost 70) and I can tell you the only way to lose weight and keep it off is to not put it in your mouth (junk food) and eat until you're full, push it away.

The best diet there is is Weight Watchers (Jenny Craig is good too). Those fat cells (even if you only have a few are just waiting to blow back up), it's not healthy.

Every summer we would go to the beach for a week with a friend who was a body builder/nutritionist and taught classes, bla bla.

He also modeled for men's health magazines. Can you imagine what he looked like. He was happily married with 3 children. Anyway, he'd start this ritual a few weeks before we'd go to the beach. He'd eat 6 small meals all during the day. It would drive us crazy because no matter where we'd be (before we left for beach) he'd have to eat. Ding! Time to eat a 1/2 sandwich with something on it like Tuna (just tuna), I don't even remember, but they were specific meals with protein in them.

What he was doing was speeding up his metabolism. He wanted to be able to eat junk he normally didn't eat but still burn the calories. I guess it worked because we'd joke, he'd weigh himself and he never gained a pound.

Fad diets don't work. My daughter is driving me crazy about some new fad died that's around $500. I'll give her the money, but as soon as she loses it she'll gain it back because it entails drinking mostly fluid. Makes no sense.

I know it may not be healthy but it similar to how I lost 26 lbs. for my son's wedding and have kept it off.

M-F I eat approx. 500-600 calories per day. Just as you described, coffee w/ a piece of fruit in the morning. Sandwich (lean, lean, lean...approx. 200 calories) and carrots/celery for lunch. Dinner is a big bowl of a clear broth based soup (w/ veggies etc). A soup dinner really fills me up~

On the weekends, I do lots of cooking for my family to use the next week...and eat what I please (obviously within reason). On weekends, I eat one main full meal, hopefully early in the day. Additionally, I aim for healthy stuff the rest of the time. Desserts only on special occasions.

I am very small framed and just didn't need all those big meals I was eating. Portion control is crucial. It took 8 mos. to lose those 26 lbs but I have kept it off for 3 years this June by continuing the same habits. I go to the Doc regularly and am healthier now than I was 10 years ago.

I hate counting calories and thinking portions. I do a modified 5/2 diet, where I eat salads for 5 days, (more like 6) and then eat something different on the weekend.

One of my closest friend's daughter got married last June with all the country club old fashioned style type weddings involved.

Anyway, this time last year she wanted to start getting off 15 to 20 pounds for the fancy long dress she knew she would be wearing. Nothing but healthy eating salads. ect... She allowed herself some (not many) desserts at the numerous showers and luncheons she attended with her daughters and friends. Also, gave up bread, cheese and her favorite burgers and Texas barbecue. She would even stop eating her salad at lunch time before she finished it to save later in the afternoon to get her to her dinner time salad and grilled chicken.

Boy did she work hard at eating healthy and looked amazing at the wedding. It has been almost a year now and as only put a couple of pounds back on. Toward the end she was not getting to bed before 2:00 a.m. so being busy helped keep the weight off. Having a wedding with 8 attendants is a pretty big calorie burning event. Not much actual exercise since she hates that just lost the weight with diet only.

Good luck and enjoy the wedding!!

I've heard of 5-2 by eating small portions 5 days and anything you want on the other 2. They can be together or separate, Sun & Wed. Good success with it.
