    <description>&lt;P&gt;Hi ladies, this is my first time posting on this Q forum.  I wanted some thoughts on this issue--my close friend's daughter has decided to try and lose about 150 lbs; she is in her late 20s.   My friend is really happy about this because he has purchased gym memberships, nutritionist sessions, personal trainers, etc. for her for about ten years in the hope it would help her start to lose weight and ultimately be more healthy.&lt;/P&gt; &lt;P&gt;Here's my concern--she is doing some type of restrictive 500 calorie-a-day diet and has lost 60 lbs. in less than 2 months, which is about a pound a day.  She is unable to exercise or do cardio during this "diet" because she can't due to the low calorie intake (according to my friend).  He says she is making sure to have protein and is drinking over ten glasses of water a day, so he thinks this approach is fine.&lt;/P&gt; &lt;P&gt;I had always heard that a safe weight loss was about 2-3 pounds per week, and includes portion control along with exercise to build muscle.  I know there are many types of diets out there that are considered successful and safe, but I'm very concerned this choice could be dangerous for her overall system.  I suggested to him that she check with her doctor before starting, but she probably has only been to the doctor once in the six years that I've known her dad so that won't happen.&lt;/P&gt; &lt;P&gt;There is also an "instant gratification" mentality at work here (she wants to lose it &lt;EM&gt;fast&lt;/EM&gt;)--that is what she's used to.  (most things that she's wanted--computers, ipads, iphones, car, etc.....--dad quickly buys&lt;IMG src="https://community.qvc.com/DesktopModules/ExactTarget/Controls/TextEditor/jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/emotions/img/blink.gif" alt="{#emotions_dlg.blink}" /&gt;....another discussion for another time)  There is not a lot of experience in patiently working towards a goal.&lt;/P&gt; &lt;P&gt;So I guess my question is do any of you have experience with this and can a person actually safely lose weight at the rate of a pound or more a day without having serious health issues as a result? &lt;/P&gt; &lt;P&gt;TIA!&lt;/P&gt; &lt;P&gt; &lt;/P&gt;</description>
