If you're looking for fish oil HD, look for fish oil that is molecularly distilled and also a fish oil that has both EPA & DHA (but be sure that the EPA % is higher than DHA). Doing both will naturally make it less "burpy" and make it a much higher quality supplement.

I personally use Source Naturals ArcticPure Ultra Potency Omega-3 Fish Oil and love it. I get it for $20 on bodybuilding.com and it lasts me 2 months (2x a day), but I'm sure you can find it elsewhere. I never get the burps with it and it has zero fish smell. Love love love.

Fish oil vs krill oil- anyone have a preference?

My doctor wants me to add either to my supplements. I was wondering if anyone has noticed a difference between the two. I use to take fish oil a long time ago but always hated the fishy taste that always seem to linger (burped up, sorry for TMI!) so was thinking the krill might be better. Anyone have brands or types they like better or thinks works best?

TIA!

It is just so much pricier than regular ol' fish oil though although Costco's price is pretty good. I like that it is sustainable harvest though- that is important to me. I really don't want to take a product like this but Dr. says I must.

I've taken Fish Oil, but I believe Krill Oil is better so we switched to that. Right now, the Vitacost RedKrill Oil is on a BOGOF promo.

FYI -
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/2012/05/are-krill-oil-pills-as-good-as-fish-oil/index.htm

Also, when you have your procedure done, you'll want to discontinue this for a good couple of weeks prior. The oil thins the blood too much and could be problematic.

I am actually suppose to have the procedure next week (21st) but it looks like it will be a no go for now. I am seeing the cardiologist Friday to see what he says but there are some issues we have to deal with first like controlling my blood pressure. UCSF also told me that they want to see my thyroid results as I came in a bit high on the Free t4 indicating hypothyroidism and they kind of indicated I either may not be able to get the procedure done at all or perhaps they meant they just want my thyroid to be functioning better first, not sure which so I have a call in to get that clarified. Ugh. I just want this over worth. I feel terrible.

That is good to know about discontinuing it though prior to surgery. I will talk to the doctor about it and see if she wants me not to start it yet just in case we will be able to do the surgery next week.

HappyDaze ~ I've taken Mega Red for several years and loved that I never had those fishy bubbles (is this a more PC term?). A few months ago I saw another brand at a "can't beat it price" so gave it a whirl. Well, you get what you pay for. I'm never switching from Mega Red again.

Not to be too nosey...what procedure are you having done? Your post caught my eye as I'm having bilateral Carpal Tunnel release surgery on the 21st and just had free T4 testing. My endocrinologist said the lower the number was worse. My CA treatment messed with my pituitary and now having severe adrenal insufficiency problems. I go in on the 14th for EKG and more pre-op testing. Good luck to both of us!!

Good to know. I've heard many good things about the mega red and they have an extra and ultra strength too. The 80 count of the extra strength is $23 at Costco and I know I've seen it on sale in the past so I picked it up and next time it is on sale I will stock up.

I am suppose to have the Acessa procedure (surgery) done to "shrink" a fibroid tumor I have. They use an ultrasound machine wand to zap it pretty much. And oh my gosh, you are right- a high number of free T4 would indicate hyper-thyroidism, not hypo! I always get that confused. But the confusing thing is that my TSH was in the normal range, however it was on the lower range of normal. And my doctor hasn't called me so she must not think it is anything to "treat" but I am going to see an endo instead anyway. What is "CA" treatment? Is the EKG they ordered because of the adrenal issue or are you having some heart issues? I am sorry you are going through a similar frustration! You go to have some tests to be cleared for a surgery only to find out other things are wrong- it is scary and frustrating! I hope everything goes well for you and you are all cleared for surgery!

On 8/12/2014 F1wild said:
On 8/12/2014 HappyDaze said:
On 8/12/2014 F1wild said:

Hi F1! Thank you for letting me know your experience with the mega red and the "other" brand!

CA is abbreviation for cancer. My particular treatment drug, Yervoy, has been found to alter pituitary, adrenal, endocrine, but I'm cancer free! That is until I get rechecked on the 19th (fingers crossed). The EKG is just part of routine pre-op tests, along with labs.

Good luck for both of us!!

oh okay sorry! Great news about being cancer free and I am sure your labs and EKG will turn out just fine! Take care and yes, good luck to us both!

I was supposed to take fish oil for cholesterol and for my eyes. I tried and tried but those pills --- big --- were tough to take and they upset my stomach. So, I decided to switch to a 1 a day small Krill pill. I have not had one problem! So much easier to swallow 1 small pill a day and no stomach upset!!!

I have taken fish oil for years for my heart disease. However, there have been several articles recently saying that fish oil is not that beneficial for heart disease. And at my 6-mo check with my cardiologist on Mon, without my mentioning anything, he commented on the research and told me to finish up the supply I had, but not to take it anymore.

Thanks everyone!

Gonnab, I've heard many say that their cholesterol numbers haven't really budged after years of fish oil but once using krill oil, many lowered it by 50 points! I think part of the problem with stuff like fish oil is that there is no regulation to oversee the claims of how much mg they REALLY contain of omega 3 so you can't necessarily go with any ol' fish oil. Consumer reports often does random testing of typical storebrands for things like glucosamine, fish oil, calcium etc to see if they really contain the % or amounts of various ingredients they say the contain and most of them fail big time! But anyway yes I have seen many studies recently that have said that fish oil is not as effective for heart health as they once thought.

That is how I chose my glucosamine- there were many studies that came out and there were only about handful that actually contained the amount they claimed. once I switched, I saw a huge difference in my dog (I use human glucosamine for my dogs- much cheaper).
