Our dentist recommends Sonicare. We have had the same one for over 20 years and it is still working. We just change the brushes every three months or sooner if we have a cold or some other such illness. We have the Elite.

Check out walmart.com. My DH and I have used Oral-B for years (decades) and have never had a problem with any type of gum disease. I prefer the small, round, head on their brushes - makes it much easier to get at the back teeth, especially if you have a smaller mouth.

I just ordered a new one two weeks ago, when our previous one conked out after about a dozen years of daily use. I got the Oral-B 4000 and we love it. Walmart had the best price and they also have a chart which shows the differences between the various types.

Good luck with it.

Do yourself a favor and buy a Sonicare. They are fabulous. They are far superior to the Oral B in my opinion. An electric toothbrush is a must.

You might want to read an article about Sonicare vs. Oral-B before you decide: here

Do a little research before you make up your mind, so that you'll be happy with your choice. Either way, an electric toothbrush beats a manual one every time.

I just purchased a new Sonicare after switching several years back to Oral B from Sonicare. Picked up a duo pack at Costco...Sonicare Elite Premium at a nice price. I really like this much better than the Oral B I was using...the brush is more compact and my mouth just feels better/cleaner after using it.

I also like the fact that Sonicare gives you a brush cover, Oral B does not. My Oral B didn't sit as securely as I'd like in it's charger and would topple over occasionally and I'd have to change the brush. I also like that this Sonicare has a gum massaging feature as well. I highly recommend the Sonicare!

I also have a good friend with gingivitis and that is what she uses, plus a water pick.

Her issue was well advanced when discovered even tho she had regular check ups, her old dentist dropped the ball. She has had several surgeries on her gums and hers is an ongoing problem. She takes excellent care of her teeth and still gets 'pockets' that need watching. She is vigelent about taking care of her teeth and spends about 20 minutes morning and night flossing, brushing and irrigating but she has no plaque when she goes in for checkups...good luck and stay on top of the issue.

I love my Sonicare, I really don't think I could live without it. I've seen some pretty good deals at Costco, and I like to get the refill brushes at Kohl's when I have a 30% coupon. Costco offers good prices on the refills too, but you have to buy a lot, which makes it an expensive purchase. Although I don't have it, Sonicare does have a model with a UV light sanitizer.

My dentist loves that I love my Sonicare!

I'm a dental hygienist and have had the opportunity to test everything from everybody.

Personally, I used the Braun/Oral B for years. It has a small, round brush head similar in size to what I use to polish teeth. It was a great TB for many of my medically compromised pediatric patients.

I Beta tested the Sonicare. Loved it, but two problems: The brush head was larger than the Oral B, so harder to reach around the back teeth. It also tickled too much. Since then, many moons ago, these problems were addressed.

Since then I've always used Sonicare. They usually send me the latest model (lucky me!) to evaluate. Right now I'm using, and loving, the Sonicare Elite. The best prices are usually through Costco and Wal-Mart, but I would do a shopping search online. I would get the "compact" brush heads, which usually come with the unit.

Aside from your electric toothbrush I would be sure your brushing correctly. I always have my patients demonstrate how they are brushing then tweak it. I absolutely hate to hear fellow hygienists just ask how many times per day or if someone is flossing or not. If you tell me where your trouble spots are I can help you fine tune.

I'd also suggest you try an at-home fluoride to swish around after you brush/floss. Listerine and the like are not fluoride and contain too much alcohol for my liking. I would recommend the "kid's" stuff, ACT. It's a sodium fluoride that will help strengthen your teeth and help swish away any extra plaque. It comes in Bubblegum, etc. for youngsters, but also flavors like mint & cinnamon.

Hope this helps!

It wasn't terribly expensive when I bought it - sale, coupon, rebate, etc. Just this morning it sounded a little funny. I don't know if I didn't have the head on right or if it's starting to die.

Make sure the metal prong that the brush head attaches to doesn't have toothpaste residue built up on it. If it is dying, call Oral B. Tell them you're disappointed that your power toothbrush didn't last long. Fudge on the purchase date. They will do something to help you. You might even you "blog" on a health and fitness column and would love to cheer for them publicly.

I'll check that, thanks. If I have to replace it, I will. I'm not against calling CS to see if it's normal or not to have lesser priced unit go that quickly, but I won't fudge on the date. It is what it is and things happen.

True, that is. Not suggesting lying...I'm always just vague.

The pursonic that QVC sells is really great. I had oral B electric tooth brushes for years but the sonic toothbrushes do a much better job.
