I googled "how many miles walking to burn 300 calories." One of the options is from about dot com. There are calculators to tell you how far you have to walk depending on age and body weight. How to maintain your current body weight - gives you the caloric intake. It was interesting.

I am 5'1" and I need to walk 12,500 steps for 5 miles.

You can measure your stride and see how many steps you need for a mile. I am 5'8"" and I need approximately 2000 steps for a mile. I think the Fitbit website tells you how to measure.

The 10,000 steps a day is the old way of stipulating the number of steps a person should get in during the day. How many steps equals a mile depends upon your stride length. Most pedometers tell you how to determine your stride length which basically is walking a certain number of steps, then measuring that length and dividing by the number of steps to get stride length.

I use a fitbit daily. Just like KonaKat said it really depends on your stride. Most sites say that 2000 steps equals a mile, so 10k equals 5 miles. But again depends on stride length. I average just over 10k steps a day but only walk 4.25 miles. I'm short (5'3"), so my strides are short. Hope this helps!

We have 2 treadmills and my wife has used 2 different types of pedometers that measure steps. The pedometers did not equal the mileage suggested for 10,000 steps for either of the pedometers.

What I said to her was she does not need to correlate steps into miles. If she wants to use the treadmill use time, not distance. I've pretty much always used time as my gauge on my workouts. However when I was training for a specific distance in a Road Race? I certainly tailored my training for getting the time for that distance down and getting my leg speed up. Unless one is training for a specific "timed/distance event" I don't know what purpose knowing the exact number relating to a different measurement would make.

Time and heart rate are the best guides to knowing if one is on the right track if their goal is getting better physically fit. If their goal is to lose weight? Time is more important than steps versus miles walked/jogged or ran, if one knows the level of their heart rate. What the heart rate doesn't tell you will be very apparent to most if they are gone over their limit for their present fitness level. Most times it will not be "during or right after", it could appear 1-2-3 days later depending on ones age. Unfortunately some time these "notices turn out to be injuries" from overuse for ones physical fitness limits.
