You probably need 65 mg elemental iron . It takes 3 to 4 months to get your iron stores back up to normal range . Hopefully they will do more blood labs in September /October before your next surgery. Andew Lessman's product unfortunately only has 18 mg of iron ( what you would lose each month if you were still having your "period" ) Slow Fe has 45 mg of elemental iron. Other products like Feosol original is vegetarian and has 65 mg of elemental iron ,also Natures Bounty Iron 65mg tablets and is white tablet no colors added. To minimize stomach issues you should take iron at bedtime - plus by taking it at bedtime it is easier to work around the 2 hours before or six hours after some medications . You also might want to take vitamin C supplement - it enhances the absorption of Iron - Andrew Lessman makes Vitamin C 500 complex which is vegetarian . So when you see your doctor next week you might ask

- how much elemental iron should you take

- does it interfere with any medications that you are presently taking

- should you also take Vitamin C 500mg

- and when should you get your next blood labs

good luck to you !

I was hoping someone might recommend an iron supplement that was effective in following

high absorption

less constipating

doesnt upset stomach

vegetarian ( I don't eat meat) eat fish.

Mainly single source, in other words doesn't have other vitamins or additives in it. Just Ferrous sulfate

has anyone tried ferrous bisglysenate (sp)?

My blood count is low all the way around. The hemotologist, says most likely from blood lose due to my surgery. I had left hip replacement June 1. I am to have right hip done in October. I did the anterior procedure, with cement. I do have osteoporosis, and RA. I did so well. Healing was supper quick. But I need to build blood up before surgery. Don't eat beef, so need suppliment.

thanks!

I've taken Slow Fe for years - no problems. Don't know about the vegetarian part - you'll have to research it. I liked the idea that it's a slow release formula. My dr had prescribed iron for me and was ok with this OTC iron.

Actually per Google: Slow Fe is vegan. The brand states that its slow-release iron tablets contain no materials derived from animal sources

Your Hematologist said, "it most likely is from blood loss from your recent surgery." Shouldn't more tests be done to know the actual cause and is that why he or she did not give you an Rx for an iron supplement? Also, there are IV treatments as well.

A person can have low iron without anemia so I assume your hemoglobin test was normal? If not, I think you need to see another doctor.

And I would reach out to your surgeon who is going to perform the surgery on you other hip in October. Maybe he knows of a more thorough Hematologist.

eta: typo

My husband had great results by taking Megafoods Blood Builder. His blood count was extremely low after colon cancer surgery. He couldn't tolerate the iron supplements he was prescribed. Blood Builder was recommended and blood count was back to normal with in a month with no digestive upsets. Thankfully he's doing great now. Wishing you the best.

Yes, I do go to hemotologist as they have been tracking me for 2 years as to why I get anemic now and then. They know I can't tolerate the ferrous sulphate pills and have given me IV ferrous sulfite by infusium which I tolerate and works. My anemia is slight. A couple weeks ago I had blood drawn, 7 vials lol. And my red counts are low, and some counts are high. With the high in some areas, and low in others they could deduce it most likely was from surgery ! The hemotologist, my ortho dr,and internist said the readings are consistent with the blood loss from surgery. They weren't real low, but I need to build up in next two months. Hope that mkes more sense.

I have sat here for a couple years unable to walk, using walker, wheelchair. Not to mention pain. A couple ortho drs wouldn't do surgery without me taking bone drug infusiums, as I have -3 in hip dexa. Also, with osteoporosis numbers so high they were afraid of fracture. Then I was sent to this one Doctor, who specializes in anterior (from the front) hip replacements. He has stellar recommendations He was fabulous. What I came to find out through talking with Physical therapists that many ortho Drs do what they are comfortable with. Anterior replacements are fairly a new trend. And using cement instead of pins, isn't always the preferred way. But on my case, they can't use pins, screws because of Osteoporosis. It takes a lot of practice , lol. My new Dr is a younger man (45?) and has done hundreds of these so I was comfortable. Actually, I didn't even know about anterior method with cement because the others doctors didn't bring it up. They said to get infusiums and sty on prolia til numbers go up. I did not want to take bone meds. I hbe he friends that had horror stories with it. It's great for some. But with my history of medication allergies md reactions. I wouldn't do it. Glad i went and had it done with this dr .
shoekitty

Dandelion root and greens are a great iron supplement you could take in addition to a traditional iron supplement and is easier on your stomach. You can get it in pill form at a health food store. I second the recommendation for Andrew Lessman's iron supplements. Good luck to you.

I have been a vegetarian over 40 years. I've tried many iron supplements. The best one I've tried & continue to use is Megafoids Blood Builder Iron. It provides Iron, B12, Folate, vitamin c & beetroot. There is no stomach upset or constipation with this iron supplement. Just energy & normal iron & b12 levels.

@shoekitty I just wanted to add a second vote for Andrew Lessman's Iron+.

I have a genetic anemia which I really have to watch. My doctor used to call in a high prescription for me when I would show up really low. It wasn't until I started with his brand that I have never had a problem since.

I take double the recommended amount for the usual prescription amount (a capsule in the morning and one at night) and I have never had a problem again. I even started regularly giving blood every two months for the past couple years, and I have stayed completely in line.

Whatever you and your doctor do go with, make sure Vitamin C is included. It helps mitigate some of those side effects from straight iron pills.

I hope you find what works for you, and feel like yourself again, soon.

I'm in my 70s and was taking a multi-vitamin with iron with no improvement in my anemia.

I switched to Lessman's pre-natal multi vitamin (has iron) + 500mg Vitamin C. I was no longer anemic 3 months later. I maintain with the same two supplements.

My dr insists I take 500mg Vitamin C at the same time as taking iron for it to be absorbed.

I
