Update on cataract eye surgery

My pre operation eye exam appointment was changed twice. Finally seen on 8/12/25. It was a 3 1/2 hour visit cause they need to do all the test again .The cataract had increased in my right eye. I knew that my vision was bad because really struggling to see to do daily necessities.The doctor said that the premium cataract ( Panoptix) lens were not covered by insurance and very expensive but he hoped that I could purchase them because I really needed them for both eyes. The doctor answered all my questions and concerns. Stated all the help that I need to make me comfortable and calm on the day of surgery would be provided. After everything the doctor asked if he could 🙏 pray with me. I stated yes because I believe in prayer 🙏. His prayer was very precious and appreciated . Both surgeries not scheduled until 11/4/25 and 11/18/ 25 and time will be determined later. I also purchased the compound drops.
My friend has completed both her eye surgery and very pleased with results and only needs readers . She couldn't afford the premium lens . She told me everything and stated it wasn't as scary as she thought it would be. Stated when she arrived they gave her something for her anxiety and started the surgery IV while they were doing all the other necessary prep.

I am so ready for my new "bionic eyes" cause price ($7100) was expensive but a necessity . I had asked the bank to increase my credit card limit.

Edited to add the correct name for the cataract Len= Panoptix.

The above mentioned price included both lens, the compound drops, and other expenses that I would be responsible for.

I had my cataract surgery last month. Everything went well, I now have 20/15 vision in both eyes.

I'm terrified for the day they tell me it's time. So used to being nearsighted, that I don't think I'll adapt to normal vision.

Before my surgery I was 20/800. Blind as a bat without glasses. I paid for toric lenses and it's the best investment I've ever made. I now see 20/15 and the only type of glasses I need are sun glasses. No readers. Very happy I chose the upgrade.

I use the big bulky sunglasses that fit over my prescription glasses , they take up so much space in my purse.❤️

Not sure if I ever heard of premium lenses for cataracts but my surgery went without issue and was paid through my insurance. Be sure you take time to look into the premium lenses. Good luck to you.

I am now 70 and had very premature cataract surgery on both eyes before my 40th birthday, which is more than 30 years ago.I know that techniques have changed. But I did get a compliment from my retina doctor on the surgery last time I saw her.

What was your vision pre-surgery?

Have asked my doctor if I will have 20/20 again (20/60 now because of cataracts) and he said everyone's different.

Congrats on 20/15! Did you have standard surgery of the extra one?

Dont be nervous, I had mine done with no tranquilizers at all, just numbing drops, very quick and you will love the results, mine were paid 100% by Medicare, I dont wear glasses.

Prior to having my cataract surgery 8/2022, I was severely nearsighted. I had worn multifocal contact lenses for many many years. The cost to replicate that in implanted lenses, or have a premium lens as referred to here, was out of reach for me as a retiree and I would not borrow funds to do so.

I didn't want to choose to have new lenses to correct for near or far vision only, so I chose to have my new implanted lenses customized for intermediate vision because I spend a significant portion of my time on my computer.

This was the perfect choice because I never need reading glasses and only use glasses with a low grade rx for clarity for distance driving. There was no additional cost with Medicare.

@Bonkers1 : Thank you. Both of my insurance paying for surgery. I forgot the correct name for the lens. But the doctor explained all the lens and each details and the reason why I needed them. The manager doing the finances and scheduling explained everything.❤️

@SouthernBee I had mine done back in 2017 and I'm guessing things have probably changed a lot since then.

I purchased the "premium" lenses and still needed readers for situations with less than bright lightening.

The doctor asked me the last time I was there if I wanted prescription glasses or wanted to continue w/the readers. I like the readers as I can buy all colors and styles. My eyes were so bad when I had the surgery done that I was limited to frames that could hold really thick lenses.
