Need Help Finding Chair For Sister

My sister just got out of the hospital. She has had acute bronchitis since June 3 and just spent 4 days in hospital. She has 3 broken ribs.

Her recliner broke down and she needs a new chair. She doesn't want to spend over $900. We have a Lazy Boy store and an Ashley store not too far away. She is short....5 ft.tall.

It has to be a store that will take her old chair out... and something powered...no handle. She is not well enough to go with me so I don't want to get one too big. She needs to be able to sleep in it as she can't get out of her bed on her own and she lives alone.

@jubilant The 2 stores you mentioned will not remove the old chair?

I purchased my leather manual recliner from Raymour & Flanigan on sale for $350 2 yrs ago. They removed the old chair & took it to the trash bin. I live in a highrise.

I purchased an extender so I would not have to lean over to use the lever/handle.

Your sister is so lucky to have you to help her. Best wishes to her for an easy recovery.

As a shorty myself, I have found that the seat depth can really vary. Some recliners are built for tall men.

Ask in person to sit on some and get recommendations.

Contact one of those places that sells equipment for elderly and disabled and ill people. ASK them if there are any lift chairs/recliners that a dr. can write a script for and get a discount.

And check to see what they have available. May have more specific lift chairs. Size wise.

I was going to say the same thing as @Sooner. My father in law had one of those recliners that lifts up for easy in and out access. He had a bad back, he was in so much pain and the recliner helped. I'm not sure what the cost was though. It wouldn't hurt to check into something like that. Good luck. Your sister is very lucky to have your help and looking out for her. 🥰

I just ran a quick search under "recliners for the elderly" and clicked on a suggested result entitled "recliners for the elderly covered by Medicare". One site was Medicare dot org, which is not the Government's Medicare website. This site said it's possible to get Medicare to pay for a portion of a lift chair. A lift chair looks like a recliner, but the seat and back tilt to help the person stand up or sit down. The private site (dot org) discusses basic Medicare qualification requirements and refers you to the Government site (dot gov) to find vendors in your sister's area that accept Medicare assignments for these chairs. If your sister qualifies for a Medicare subsidy, she may be able to find a chair that meets her needs within her budget.

As I write this, I'm sitting in my late Aunt's lift chair. Hers has a special feature that allows you to remain in a seated position while elevating your legs to a horizontal position parallel to the floor. Most chairs require you to lay flat to elevate your legs to a horizontal position (this would have been very painful for her). She bought her chair about 5 years ago and it cost about $1800. I recall that "standard" lift chairs were about half that cost. She slept in it every night until she entered hospice care.

@Mz iMac When we bought out latest couch from Raymour and Flanagan, they did not take our old one they gave us the number of a thrid party that we had to pay for the removal

JMO but of the two stores I would check Ashley first if she doesn't want to spend a lot. Also Ashley's website shows this about furniture removal:

Good luck shopping and here's hoping your sister loves what you find. Having bronchitis and having 3 broken ribs sounds soooo painful. Poor girl, prayers for her recovery.

Lazy Boy has a selection of petite recliners. Not sure if the prices would meet her $ requirement.

If you have a community senior center they may have a contact for a less expensive option for the recliner removal. Or see if a neighbor could assist getting it to the curb if thrash company does bulk pickup. (Sometimes that needs to be scheduled.)

@Mz iMac An update: The chair was able to be fixed. How long it will last is another thing! I told my sister about the extender and her son will be getting her one this week.

I also told her about all the other posts so we have so much more

knowledge now to go by if the chair doesn't hold up very long.
