shoulder surgery anyone?

I've heard this is one of the most difficult and not always successful surgeries as told to me by several doctors.

I know there are different reasons to have it and different results. Anyone that has had one I'd really like to know your experience!

@Mom2Dogs, I know you have posted that you are recovering

from one.How was it?

Torn rotater cuff surgery .. everything went well ... complete recovery ..

Wasn't a picnic .. but I followed all instrucionts and PT to the letter ...

very happy with the results ... I was in so much pain before the

surgery I really had no choice...

I know several who have had torn rotator cuff surgery, all very successful, and recovery was not that difficult, just took time.

I worked with a guy who had rotator cuff surgery and he was back playing golf in 6 weeks.

If there are at least consults with two surgeons, then I would take heed of their advice. Some problems are remarkably difficult.

"I've heard" is bad poor choice for anything. Rumors and urban myths.

@on the bay My shoulder surgery was to do a fall - I broke the humerus bone I cannot recall how far off the fall moved the bone but the doctor said it was sigificant. I remember thinking to myself that I fell really hard on my right side. It honestly felt like my arm was hanging loose...quite painful.

I feel like I am doing really well. The incision has not been painful, what was the most painful was from the wrist to my elbow. That area was either really bruised from the fall or the doctor thought maybe blood pooling from the surgery. My elbow is still a bit sore and the bruising is better every day. The skin was very 'touchy' and hurt.

I believe the elbow area is still a little swollen because of the sling, as long as I am at home I can leave the sling off for a few hours but not all day.

This is my first experience with a break. PT consult was last week and the 1st visit is on Tuesday, I am looking forward to it...I am pretty stiff. Mornings are rough until I can loosen up.

I have some pain but have been managing it with a Tylennol product, I take less each day. The oxycodone ran out several days after surgery, and honestly I did not need it after that. I think my doctor did a good job.

Are you in need of surgery? My niece had to have a shoulder replacement due to chemo that effected her bones....I helped her for a while after surgery, that was very painful, nothing like what I experienced. Good luck

My sister had rota cuff surgery. She did well. She just needed open front shirts for a while. She never went for PT afterwards and all is good.

My daughter's mom in law had a shoulder replacement. I saw her before surgery and she looked like death warmed over....dark sunken teary eyed, always in extreme pain.

She is 79 and recovered. She had a bunch of PT and did well. She is a happy camper now.

When I went to PT after knee replacement, there were quite a few patients there after shoulder surgery. There didn't seem to be any problems.

I wouldn't be scared to have shoulder surgery....I would just make sure I had an excellent surgeon. There is usually a long wait to get an appointment.

A friend had stem cell therapy for a torn rotator cuff and it worked tremendously well. He did follow protocol and was diligent with after care i.e. physical therapy and the exercises. This was before he was on medicare and his regular insurance didn't cover it, it was around $4k out of pocket. That was 6 years ago.

Well worth it in his mind as he's an avid golfer.

In 2008, just as I was rehabbing from a knee replacement, I fell and shattered my L humerus. It was incredibly painful both before and after the surgery, which was a shoulder replacement.

I was always thankful that it was my L shoulder and not my right because my mobility was limited, but then I took a another tumble which shattered the R humerus and another shoulder replacement.

I cannot express how depressed I was. Both shoulders and upper arms still hurt and I find many activities difficult to do. I have been told that this is normal when the injuries are from trauma like my falls. I don't want to be negative but that's my story. I hope your outcome is better, OP.

@tansy I am sorry your recovery did not go well. I think I am doing pretty good but I wll say today I feel really tired and achy...but maybe that is to be expected. I now have this slight fear of falling...hopefully this will pass as I progress.

I probably shouldn't have posted, @Mom2Dogs. I was told my bone was totally shattered both times. I did do the PT. I do a series of exercises daily to loosen up the shoulder joint.

I do worry about another fall. It's hard not to.

Depends on how bad the tear is for rotator cuff surgery. My DH has had 3... first was so bad, good thing he had a superb surgeon who thought it would be lapriscopic but turned into full blown open surgery too gross to describe. PT was extremely painful.

A future repair of same shoulder went very well and hardly any PT. Very good recovery for both.

3rd surgery different surgeon said it wasn't possible to repair. just cleaned things up. Disappointing, and was his other shoulder.

Just finding yourself an excellent experienced surgeon is the best advice I can give you. It's a very common surgery as you know.

My husband just learned that he needs rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders.

He has been in pain on and off for over 20 years and recently has been in so much pain that it keeps him up at night. A new MRI revealed that he has bone spurs on both shoulders that have torn tendons.

He's getting a second opinion another surgeon soon and hopefully can get this done soon, the problem is it seems to take forever to get in to get anything done these days.

I haven't seen you post about this so forgive me if you've already said but are you getting this surgery and when?

Wow, that's interesting about stem cell therapy. I need to look into that as an alternative for my husband, he just found out he needs rotator cuff surgery on both shoulders...

I don't always share a lot of personal medical or other stuff as much as I used to on here and I do have a wonderful family and support system. They've been with me thru everything.

But I admit I am kind of freaked out everytime I think of it.

I'm amazed at what so many here go thru!
