How do you clean your ears

This is not meant as a joke, Q tips are not good. I have seen the reaming devices on Amazon but they hurt my ears. Seriously what is left

Go to an ENT dr. couple of times a year. Best option for the older among us.

One shouldn't clean their ears. They are designed to be self-cleaning. If there is wax buildup, an ENT is warranted. I go once a year and I never have wax buildup. He usually removes skin flakes stuck to my eardrum.

I rarely, if ever clean my ears. My mom's philosophy was always "never put anything more than your elbow in your ear". I believe I once had them cleaned by an ENT due to an ear ache.

I've been "cleaning" my ears with a Q-tip for decades. No problems. When I was a child my mother sometimes use the "u" shaped end of a bobby pin. My father would have a fit!! But I survived--LOL! Can't imagine going to an ENT just to have my ears cleaned unless I was having a problem.

Never had a problem using Q-Tips either.

Obviously not everyone's ears are the same. Some may need more care than others and sometimes a professional may need to do the job.

Are these real questions? Do you not know how to clean your ears or when to wear underwear or how to handle getting a mammogram?

@Bri369 Huh if I didnt have questions I would not ask them, life is full of questions and I did not ask how to get a mamogram, Learn to read and comprehend

I have a diffuser attachment for my hair dryer that has "fingers" with holes in the end to direct the air to my scalp. I just stick one of those "fingers" in my ear and let the warm air dry them if it's really bothering me. You don't want to dry them out too much though.

Actually, my ENT told me to do it myself...eye dropper and Hydrogen Peroxide to keep the wax from building up.

She said when I went to have them do it, that it wasn't really necessary with regular cleansing.

I swim a lot and never had an issue with water in my ears...ever. I have also never cleaned my ears out with anything...ever.

@RespectLife Years ago my doctor suggested that method to me and I used it for years. However, the main reason I didn't mention that is that current thinking is that hydrogen peroxide dries out the ears too much. I already have a problem with some sort of dermatitis in my ears, so i don't need to dry them out too much which would encourage more flaking. As I said in my post, I don't have wax buildup, only the flaking/dermatitis problem.

My ENT also allows me to apply an anti-fungal to my ear canal using a Q-tip because I occasionally get a fungal infection. Antibiotics don't work on those.

He's very much in demand and if I don't go in once a year for a look see (not specifically for a cleaning), I could lose my patient status and would have trouble getting in if I get another infection. He also prescribes some drops for me that helps with the itching associated with the dermatitis.

ETA: I looked online and it appears that using hp in ears to soften ear wax is okay. It's wounds that are the problem in that it also kills healthy skin you're wanting to heal.

I clean the outside with soap and water and use a Q tip but never push it into my ear canal. I have no problem with wax.

My husband on the other hand has a big wax problem. He was advised by his doctor to use a rubber bulb syringe and to flood his ear canal with hydrogen peroxide. Hunks of hardened wax comes out.

He now uses an electric water powered ear wax remover he brought from Amazon. He says it works well.

He uses a reaming device too. This man makes more ear wax than anyone I know. He is also hard of hearing and wears hearing aids.

I don't have earwax but my dad used a product called Debrox, which is an over the counter ear drop made to clear ear wax. You might want to Google it or check it out at the drug store.
