Cataract surgery today

I'm having my cataract surgery today and I'm a bit nervous. Not sure why. It's not until 2:30 and I can't eat for drink for 8 hours prior. I have talked to them about not using anesthesia and they said a lot of their patients don't use it. I had lasik, not comparing, but I didn't use any anesthesia. They just numb the eye. I'm curious to see how my vision is after although I know it will take a few days or weeks. I'm having monvision like I had lasik. They are doing my eye for close up first since it's the worst. On my way to get some sunglasses and eye drops. I have the prescription drops but they said I could use moisture drops as well for comfort.

Good luck to you! My doctor automatically did dropless cataract surgery. It was fantastic not to have the bother of incessant drops. I was so happy to see colors again afterward!

For LASIK, local anesthesia is used...numbing drops.

For cataract surgery, a local is used as well. In addition, most people are also given propofol which makes you sleepy. It also keeps you from reacting during the eye surgery and moving.

Cataract surgery takes longer than lasik surgery.

I came home from my first cataract surgery seeing well. I drove the next day and went to work.

With my second eye, I came home and hopped on my iPad. I had no problems with waiting for my vision to return. There was over 15 years between cataract surgeries on each eye.

I saw better after cataract surgery both times than I did after Lasik.

@KCDiva I had both eyes done in October, the 1st and the 15th.

I had an IV but was not out. I could hear what was going on. Felt nothing. The actual surgery was 7 minutes.

Nothing to it and best thing ever. Mine were so bad I was banned from driving from the beginning of July until my surgery.

The morning after my 1st surgery I went for a check with my Dr., he said I could drive locally. I almost fell out of the chair. My vision in my right eye was good enough to drive.

Many places have surgery centers where they do cataract surgeries like an assembly line. You're in and out before you know it.

I had mine early in the morning and kept a dentist appointment in the same afternoon. Might as well ruin the whole day I figured.

I'm starving! I couldn't eat since midnight and now at 11AM...really hungry and miss my coffee.

My other eye is next Thursday.

I'm having both eyes done in February.

I never had LASIK because the very idea of eye surgery made me nervous.

Many years have passed and I'm at the point where if I don't have this surgery, I'll be left with only three choices: Lab, Golden or Shepherd.

I need to be able to see so I'm looking forward to the surgery.

Again, I think we need to start a Cataracts Club here.

They told me I could not eat or drink after 6AM this morning. I had some coffee early and a piece of fruit. I can't wait all day to eat or drink water. I'd love some water but I'll refrain.

It's normal to be nervous but you'll be fine They don't use general anesthesia with cataract surgery. Surely your surgeon told you that. They numb the eye with eye drops and inject a local anesthetic around the eye.

Hmmm. I never had any injections around the eye for cataract surgery....just a bunch of numbing drugs and a thick goopy glob from a small tube placed on the bottom rim of my eye.

When I had a retina repair, I had a injection right in my eye ball. My sister hadmuscular degeneration and I took her to the doctor for years and she got an injection right in her eye. She never minded. Modern medicine can really numb the eye well with drops.

I have had four different surgeries on my right eye. You name it, I had it.

Had both eyes done about 4 yrs. ago. Yes, they numbed the eye but did not get an injection around the eye. They did give me something thru an iv though because I remember the guy who gave it was also in the room during surgery. Whatever it was it was very light because I was well aware of everything going on. I remember the dr. telling me that if I felt the need to sneeze or cough to raise my hand lol.

I have had 2 with no anesthesia, just numbing drops. Use the compounded drops, so easy just working with one bottle, costs $40 but well worth it. The 3 bottle set is free, at least mine were at the hospital I went to. Best of luck.
