I was having some gut issues and went through some labs that showed significant imbalance of good vs bad microbes. Drink non-dairy plant based Ripple milk, which has more calcium than regular milk and the expiration date is months away when not opened. 🤗

I had such a bad case of acid reflux that I had an upper endoscopy done to make sure there wasn’t anything wrong with my esophagus.

The good, and the bad about PPI's. They work but the side effects are difficult. I had to take Protonix to heal an ulcer a while back. I know that PPIs are famous for causing osteoporosis, so I knew I wanted to get off at ASAP. I titrated down....taking a little less and less each day, then every other day....then twice a week....then stopped. It isn't easy getting off them, but it can be done. Doctors prescribed them so easily, but rarely disclosed to the patients the harmful side effects they can cause.

I took Nexium for awhile, but my insurance wouldn't cover it, so had to change to a generic. Ended up on Pantoprazole. Not quite as good as Nexium and I occasionally need to take a Pepcid Complete. Tums does nothing for me.

I did go off for awhile, but I had a couple of choking incidents (passed out once) and my doctor put me back on them. I had an endoscopy and they ended up doing a balloon procedure to stretch my esophagus. The doctor that did the procedure suggested I stay on the PPI's.

I asked my doctor about the tie to osteoporosis when I saw an article in the news about it. It said there was no cause/effect relationship proven in the study in question. He also mentioned he was surprised I was the only patient of his to ask him about it, LOL.

I've had no issues taking them and I get a physical every year as well as bone scans every couple of years.

As far as all the "may gets", most studies linking PPIs to these issues are observational and do not prove cause and effect. The data on the association between PPI use and dementia and heart disease is inconsistent. So, for me, the benefits outweigh the risks.

That new drug may be great, but I'm sure it's quite expensive and Medicare probably won't cover it.

I have taken Nexium for years, and by guidance of my doctor, I take it 2 x daily. I have had no problem with it. I take the generic form from Costco and I think it is just as good as Nexium. I am more afraid of getting Esophageal Cancer from GERD than I am about taking Nexium. My labs and bone scan have been good.

I am a nurse and have taken care of many Esophageal Cancer patients and that is one thing I want to avoid. It is a terrible disease and can be caused by GERD.

I'm not on them, but I think you have to wean yourself off of these drugs or you'll experience rebound acid. Google it and you'll probably get suggestions for how to come off of it. I know that some people really need them and can't stop taking them.

Hi!! @CherryHuggs

I just had to get off that Omeprezole. It was bothering me more than the reflux. I don’t take any meds (knock on wood) so maybe why it didn’t agree with my system.

Anyways my GI Dr recommended going dairy free. I used to eat a lot of butter and cheese too. It’s been over 2 years since I started and it was the best decision ever.

I don’t miss any of it now. There’s dairy free butter too that’s delicious! Who knew!!

I buy my Ripple at Target, but if you have a Wegmans they carry it there too. Target has it on sale more than Wegmans.

I like it better than skim milk. I buy the unsweetened (blue bottle) and every now and then the vanilla (red bottle) of Ripple. Also 8 grams of Protein and 25% Vitamin D per glass. And 50% more calcium than regular milk. The bottles I’m buying now unopened don’t expire until next year!

I even order the Ripple protein shakes through Amazon using their discounted auto delivery service. ❤️ the shakes! 20 grams of Protein in one 11 oz bottle.

Give them a try! 🤗🤗🤗

So good that you were able to get off of the meds. I hope to work my way off of them. The Dr always said they are safe, no problem! Not even true.

@Effie54 wrote:

Hi again!! @CherryHugs

I just looked it up and it said Tums does not contain Aluminum.

I liked taking them in the evening because they not only helped with the reflux they also gave me a better nights sleep. They have calcium in them too, which is a plus.

I eventually lowered the dose from 3-4 each night to even 1/2 a Tum each night and my reflux never returned!

I could stop the Omeprezole completely and start the Tums, because I was on the lowest dose to begin with.

Wishing you Good Luck!! 🤗

I agree that the benefits might be better than what can happen from the reflux issues!! That is not good at all. I need to do better with food I do know this. I cant just keep on eating anything I want!! Im not sure many ppl know of possible side effects at all!
