How Is Your Mood?

This is what the PA asked me at my last visit to get my BP meds.

Is this new? Never ever was asked this.

I said "fine", because it is. I don't feel it is his business either way. If someone wants to discuss their mood they can bring it up and that's fine. To me, him asking is intrusive.

I wouldn't appreciate being asked this at the doctor's visit, PA or other. Mental health being talked about so openly now, perhaps healthcare is mandating PA's ask this.

I think it's just another way to ask those mental health questions they are required to ask for some years now.

To how is your mood I probably would have said good, how is yours?

I know they think they are helping people who may be depressed but I don't think yes or no answers are good to label someone or help. I have often not answered or just said no to all of the are you this? are you that? etc. They are annoying.

If I wanted to talk about something I wouldn't do it by answering yes or no questions from a pat form at a regular drs office.

I personally don't find those questions intrusive. It's a doctor's office looking out for your well-being. When I get my annual Medicare wellness visit, they ask all kinds of questions like that.

They are just making sure you are functioning OK because otherwise you might not mention it.

It's a fair and honest question.

So many people are suffering in silence. If one person answers honestly, the PA has broken the ice and begun to help a person with problems. If must be a difficult question to ask, but I think it's a very necessary one! No one should be ashamed or offended by such a question. Answer it honestly! Your physician (or PA) deserves your respect. He/she is doing their job and they DO care.

This was not a Medicare wellness visit. I was forced to see him to get my BP meds. I have to be seen once a year.

He took me off one of my BP meds since I've dropped a lot of weight. My goal is to get off other 2 meds and then I won't have to go to Dr, unless I'm circling the drain.

@febe1. I did a quick Google search and it said no. Medicare will pay for it but you don't "have" to have one. You can double check on that. I know I've skipped several years without one.

I understand, @CrazyKittyLvr2 . It's the same with me. I've taken one and the same med for 20 years, but I must go in or it will not be refilled.

Ive' been asked that too-What do you do for fun etc? Do you feel safe etc?

Well one thing I don't do for fun is go to these dr appointments!

Not the same thing but sometimes when people have asked How are you? and I haven't replied and they say good in reply to my no reply!

I know it's all pleasantries but I think it's really nice when at some places I've been and someone asks how are you and they actually wait to hear how you are!

Or as a friend of ours would always answer- to "How are you?"

He'd answer: "I'm glad you asked! You got 3 hours? Sit down!"

@lthBirkiLady I'm capablr of taking care of my own mental health, I don't expect life to be puppies and rainbows, life can be hard and the sooner you realize it the better off you will be.

Just give me my meds and back off.

@febe1 they aren't mandatory but the doctor gets paid a lot more for an annual Medicare Wellness visit than other visits.

Of course, @CelticCrafter. I didn't just fall off the turnip truck. They particularly love my insurances as it pays quickly, unlike many others!

Are you on Medicare? If so, that's NOT intrusive at all, and I'm surprised you would think so.

Medicare REQUIRES health care providers and insurance companies to "cover all the bases" so those types of questions are necessary ... by law.

Older people can experience depression and not even really be aware of it, so this can start a conversation that should be had.

Healthcare providers should never assume you have family members in constant contact with you and are monitoring how you are doing.

Some people have no family left.
