My Dad had a kidney stone that had to be removed surgically. We were on vacation in Walt Disney World. The man never said a word about it until we got home.

He was put in the hospital. The Doctors were worried that since his kidney was blocked for so long that he might have kidney damage.

Well they opened him up and removed the stone. Urine shot 20 feet across the operating room. So his kidney was working.

His biggest problem was that he could not wear anything around his waist afterward. No pajamas, he had to find nightshirts. No pants, no belts, you get the idea. So nightgowns and bathrobes.

He wasn't in the hospital long. As soon as all systems were working like they should, he was released.

Good luck. I have had several kidney stones but was able to pass them. I have a 7 cm kidney stone that isn't bothering me, so I am not bothering it.

I had kidney stone surgery but it was done as an out patient. I had one big stone and several little stones.

I'm sorry to tell you that it was quite painful for about 2 days afterward. I had to take pain pills which I hate doing because they make me so sleepy. After 2 days it was much better.

I hope all goes smoothly for you, @bonnielu. Yes, probably a few days of pain or discomfort but then you'll be happy it's over and that you had it done. I never had this kind of surgery but I had a cancerous kidney removed in February. I did really well but my post op care was different than yours, I'm sure. One thing I can tell you is to stick with your pain meds on schedule. It's much easier to manage the pain that way rather than wait for the pain to get so bad and then the meds can't catch up. It's possible that you could be on a stool softener for a few days too until all the plumbing wakes up again.
