I avoid artificial sweetners so I read labels. I was unaware that erythritol was one of them until I googled it. Had I known I would not have bought the item.

Is it common knowledge that it's an artifical sweetener and has side effects?

Yes, it is a sugar substitute although not really artificial. It is synthesized from corn using enzymes and fermentation. However it does cause GI issues in some people. It's often mixed with other, extremely sweet sugar substitutes to make a product that spoons and measures like sugar, Stevia and Monkfruit to name a couple.

There are basically 3 types of sugar substitutes. This chart shows most of them. The group in the middle are considered potential problem makers and are totally artificial with zero-calorie. The list on the right are naturally-derived sweeteners and have a caloric value...they have a carb content, aka 'sugar alcohols'.

I'm sensitive to this because of the way we eat and I've become a label reader besides going down the rabbit hole now and then. Just because it's listed on my chart doesn't mean I endorse them all, though. There are also more which are not listed because they are not keto friendly, in case you see some of yours missing or they may be using a different name. For instance, Lo Han Guo is another name for Monk Fruit.
