Question For Those With Peanut Allergies

Our church is having a community function and I have been asked to bring some home baked goodies. The items I'm making are from a box (cookies, brownies, etc.). The ingredients don't say there is nuts but it says in parenthesis that it could have been made where peanuts were present.

Should I indicate these were from a box? How would you label these items? Thanks.

Hi! It's great that you noticed! My daughter had peanut allergies for years (outgrew). If you don't want to reveal that your baked goods originated in a box, I don't think you have to. I'd just put up a sign that indicates that the goods were baked where peanuts were present.

My granddaughter has a severe peanut allergy. She is also allergic to some tree nuts. The issue is not so much that the mix came from a facility where peanuts are present because almost all baked good mixes are made in a facility where nuts are present but if it says made on shared equipment with products using nuts. If this is the case you would need to indicate this on your baked goods.

Unfortunately my granddaughter does not eat any home baked goodies unless her mom makes them using all nut free ingredients.

As someone with peanut allergies, I say yes place a notice by bake goods. I have had peanut allergies all my life am now 70. When I was working and employees brought in baked goods, I never ate them. Everyone thought I didn't like them, until I said something about my nut allergies. From then on when someone brought something in they let me know if the item had nuts.

There are all kinds of different peanut allergies. I can eat items that are made in a factory that produces items with nuts, but not if the product is made on the same machine.

@Winkk I would skip the brownies & cookies & make Rice Crispy treats. Clearly no worry about peanuts or its aroma.

Better yet, go to BJ's & buy the jumbo box of already made Rice Crispy Treats, lay them out in a tray like you made them yourself.

Same here wiith my DIL..I make sure even the pans I use have not been used with nuts.

My niece has severe gluten allergies..We use disposable bakeware, etc.

They both carry eppie pens.

I have a recipe for them that's delicious and extra gooey.

I've made them 3 times last month for my neighbors.

1 1/2 cup unsalted butter

2 ten ounce bags of miniature marshmallows, buy the cheap ones.

Melt butter in a large pot, do not brown the butter. Low heat.
Add the marshmallows until melted and blended.

Take off stove.

Add 1/2 half teaspoon vanilla extract, blend.

Add 9 1/2 cups krispy cereal. I usually use 9 cups, one cup at a time.

It's important not to over cook the butter or over heat it.

You'll see the melted marshmallows throughout.

Put the mixture into a baking dish, gently pat it down, you don't want them to be hard!

Gooey should be the end result.

@Winkk My granddaughter is severly allergic to ALL tree nuts. By severe I mean she goes into anaphalactic shock within seconds. She is not allergic to peanuts (so far) we do avoid all nuts to be on the safe side.

I have called or emailed so many companies in the past 18 months to confirm if the item is produced in a dedicated facility - meaning no nuts in or around any equipment.

Most times the label will say produced in a factory that uses tree nuts or equipment may have been shared. I avoid all of these products. I really don't want to take the chance when she is visiting me for the summer.

If I were you, I would definitely put a sign out with the cookies. This would be the courteous thing to do.

@Alsace Gal My 1/2 + century yr old daughter bakes hers like your receipe since high school. Only she adds sprinkles on top. Since her child is grown, she only bakes them when she visits her young cousins & sometimes for me when I visit if I ask her too.

Last month I wanted some and knew if I kept them in the house I would eat all of it.

I asked my neighbor if he liked them and yes he does. I made the whole recipe, kept one row and gave the rest to him and his wife,
