Upcoming D & C

never had one in all my 72 yrs. Now I have some significant abnormalities in my uterus, necessitating this procedure and a biopsy. I'm really worried. Have any of you had this done? How was the recovery? My APRN says just a few days of rest and I'll be fine

@smoochy - I had my only one after a miscarriage years ago. I was back teaching in 3 days. I slept, but I don't remember having a lot of pain. I think you'll be fine!

I've had both a uterine biopsy and a D&C, but at different times. To be honest, the biopsy was very uncomfortable because I wasn't given any pain medication beforehand.

I was given some pain medication before the D&C but was awake during the procedure.I didn't feel any discomfort.

The D&C took longer, but both were relatively quick. Recovery for both procedures was a breeze. Best wishes!

My sister recently had the same thing! She was 68 at the time. They removed what had to be removed, had biopsy and thank God she's fine! She rested for a few weeks but she said she didn't have any pain.

I've had a hysteroscopy (sp?) and also a uterine polyp removal surgery...so somewhat similar.

I was under sedation and when I woke I had a tiny amount of cramping (not bad) and slight bleeding for a couple of days but no real bad pain. I was feeling so good after surgery that we went out to eat on the way home.

So really not bad....the time leading up to it I was a nervous wreck but don't be like me and worry too much because it really wasn't that bad at all! Good luck!

I supposedly had a uterine biopsy a couple weeks ago in the office. She said I may feel a little pinch. Whoa! Yeah that hurt a lot. Unfortunately she was unable to get enough tissue for testing at that time.

I just wanted to share my experience with my first colonoscopy at age 77. I was scared to death and kept thinking I would cancel but I didn't.. The worst part was the preparation. I got nauseated with the morning prep. I was shaking when I went into the room. I was wheeled on a gurney and to the testing. I was awake for a few minutes before I was out like a light. The next thing I remember was being back in my room. I got the results and they were good. I was relieved.

My point is I think the anticipation was worse than the test. I just want to wish you well. Nothing in life is easy but it will work out. Take care.

Never had any abdominal surgery until I was 67. I had a stream of blood come out of me. I did the biopsy in the doctors office. It was painful and I passed out. Because they could not get significant tissue, I had a D&C and a polyp was removed. After surgery, I went out to eat and had no pain at all. I just took it easy for 1-2 days. Everything was okay with the outcome.

Wow I was not aware they still did that kind of surgery now that everything is laproscipic. My Mom had several of the in the 1960's the dark ages for female medicine

No need to worry. Easy peasy. You're put out and feel nothing. It's done as outpatient. Bleeding afterwards for several days, and you'll be tired from the anesthesia. You might have some slight cramps, but you'll be fine in a few days.

I've heard many say that after a certain old age with women, we really don't need to continue having pa ckeckups routinely done (on an annual basis as we used to).

I'm going to be real and honest, I have not been to see me NP for a checkup in 4 years or so.

Should I be making an appointment for a full-fledged checkup? I'll be 71 towards end of April. Would this be a good or great birthday gift to myself? Should this be?

Anyone who wishes to weigh in, I'm reading and listening. Thx

@PINKdogWOOD I might suggest you talk to your primary, get their opinion and see what you are comfortable with. I was told I didn't need any futher pap smears a few years ago when I was around 67. But I still get a yearly physical and a yearly mammogram.

@GingerHead , I've had the same procedures done as you mentioned here. I had very very slight bleeding that same day. I felt fine afterwards.

the Gyn office will be calling me on Monday to schedule this. It will be on a Friday in a couple of weeks, not sure of exact date yet. Your comments have eased my mind a lot! 😊 thanks

YEARS ago, I had a procedure while awake where the dr had to dilate my cervix, go in and take biopsies. It hurt like all get out. However, he did say it seems to be way more painful for women who have never had children. I'm not sure why, something to do with the cervix having never been dilated. I bled heavily for a couple weeks afterwards.

I'll be having my first pap in about 10 years the end of next month and I was scared about that. What a wimp I am.

I have not had a D & C, but I have had and internal pelvic ultrasound, hysteroscopy, uterine biopsy, and ultimately a total hysterectomy and oophrectomy. There was some discomfort. No big deal.

I'm same age as you. I've had many d&c's---really no big deal. Biopsy also--just a small taking of tissue. Important thing is to relax ---take a tranquilizer beforehand.

Ask, demand if necessary anesthesia----could be just a intravenous sedative.

You might feel a little sore for a few days.
