Zepbound Weight Loss

Just wondering if anyone here has heard about the new weight loss shot called Zepbound?

It's being heralded as the next frontier in weight loss and expected to rake in billions.

I read this on my Apple Newsfeed. Sounds very promising for those who need to lose weight to improve their health. Says people lost up to 48lbs. tirzepatide is the generic name.

@On It I know, I hadn't heard about it either.

@4kitties Yes, all meds inevitably may have some side effects. I guess you just have to weigh the differences in those that are being posed by the problem versus the solution.

I hadn't heard of it but read it has the same exact ingredient and strength as mounjaro (tirzepatide)

So the only difference as cited by many news articles and FDA is that they are "branded" for different uses.

Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes and Zepbound for weight loss. So just marketing to a different reason and maybe make it more availlable for those who need to lose a lot of weight without diabetes. Maybe it will be more readily covered by insurance.

I see it as drug companies realizing how much money they can make by marketing the same drug to more people and in a different way and not having to have a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes in order to get it prescribed.

I know some who could not continue Mounjaro (tirzepatide) because the side effects made them too sick while others were fine with it,

and did lose weight.

@on the bay Yes, that's what I read too. It sounds as though they may have finally released the generic form, making it less expensive and covered by insurance for those who need it.

It also said it was for chronic weight management in those who are overweight with at least one medical condition caused by or related to being overweight.

I have a cousin who's been getting the ozempic shots from a physician and they were not covered by her insurance. Hopefully, this will alleviate some of the financial burden for folks.

I'm just glad the fda gave approval for this medication to be used primarily for weight loss. It will help a lot of people by having their insurance help pay for it.

From what I read, the injected mgs vary from how they're given to diabetic patients a bit. It seems they progressively work up to 15mg per week.

Zepbound is the very same medication as Mounjaro. I have been on Mounjaro over a year and 1/2 for diabetes. I have lost 85 pounds. I have done really well on Mounjaro, my A1C is 5.3. I have not had bad side effects. Some nausea in the first 2 days after I take the shot. I have medication for nausea. In all, the nausea is mild if I have it at all.

What is stressful for me right now is that I can't get my Mounjaro. I have been off of it a total of 7 weeks so far this year, and the pharmacy called me yesterday and told me they expect it to be on short supply for another month. Does your appetite come back when off of the medication? Yes, so far, not to bad but anxious to get back on my medication. I do not want a high blood sugar or to gain weight back. Once, on you have to stay on it or you will gain weight back. I am sure the Lilly company will figure out their supply problems. These medications are a God send for those of us who have really struggled with weight.

Mounjaro is only FDA approved for Diabetes. When I started on it in August 2022 it had just been approved in May. The clinical trials on non-diabetics were not complete yet. Eventually, those clinical trials were completed and the medication was approved for weight loss. I do believe you have to have a BMI over 32 to qualify and a little under 32 if you have a comorbitiy such as Sleep Apnea, heart disease etc.

@conlt Maybe that's why they've released it as a different medication called Zepbound. There is still Mounjaro. Now, you don't have to be that much overweight and any condition related to the weight can count towards your approval such as high blood pressure.

Since approved for the chronic treatment of weight management, I'm guessing they're expecting people with this predisposition to obesity will need to continue taking it.

Im really glad you've had so much success with Mounjaro. That's what my uncle takes for his diabetes too. He wasn't overweight when they started him on it and he's only lost minimal weight, maybe ten pounds in the past couple years. It's funny how it doesn't effect the weight of some, but still helps with their diabetes.

@cheriere I have heard of this and also Wegovy which is used for weight loss vs diabetes. Not sure how insurance plays into these costs as I know Ozempic can be. $1500 or more per month if insurance is not used.

My cousin had been going to get the ozempic shots once a week and I think she said they were around $200. I'm not certain if that's per shot or month...still a lot!

Very few insurance plans pay for anything weight related.

I read about it. Like Ozempic it's an injection Glp1 medication. The benefits and risks are probably the same as the other Glp 1 medications. And the cost. It's certainly not the next frontier, it's just more of the same.

On Mounjaro, I started on 2.5 mg x 1 month, then 5 mg x 1 month, then 7.5 mg, then 10 mg, then 12.5. I was not put up to the 15 mg. The medication is still in short supply.. I have not had it in a month now.

@cheriere Yes, I will be on it for life. I was put on it for Diabetes too. My labs are excellent, all of them. It is really amazing. I am perturbed right now because Monjaro is on short supply and I cannot get it. When off of it, I am afraid I am going to go back to my old appetite. The medication really changes my thinking about eating. Research shows obesity is a disease of the mind. I am lucky that my insurance pays for my medication because of diagnosis.

Good for your uncle, as a nurse I am happy diabetics have these medications, they make diabetes management easier than I have ever seen it. Plus the medications offer protection from heart disease, and with weight loss, the risk of death.

@conlt My uncle was unable to get his Mounjaro for nearly two weeks. The drugstore basically told him what you said about it being in short supply.

Thankfully, he finally got it last week. I do know that his sugar spiked really high and it took a few days for it to come down even after he got his medicine. It's been the only one that's ever been successful in keeping his levels very good.

I have been on Monjaro since the beginning of the year for type 2 diabetes. I have lost about 10 pounds. I have cut back and don't seem to eating much but the wait is coming off slowly. My sugar is normal again. I have to go get my A1C checked in the next few weeks. I am guessing it will be normal again and I am curious to see if they will take me back off. I was on Trulicity last year for 6 months and lost some weight and my A1C went to normal so they took me off it. It slowly started going back up even though I was watching what I ate. I am on the second lowest dose and really don't want to go up. It does make me nauseous the first couple days after the shot but other wise no issues. I had more stomach issues on Trulicity.
