Metformin XL500

I know that a few years ago there was a recall on it but my doctor says that's not an issue now. When she prescribed it for me, I told her that I hadn't heard anything good about it. She wants me to take it for pre diabetes which I didn't even know it was for. The listed side effects is long but she says they might not happen to me. I'm sure some will because everything seems to make me nauseous/dizzy. So I'm wondering if any of you take it and consider the benefit is worth the time it takes to get used to taking it. Thanks.

I also had concerns about taking Metformin XL500, my Dr. assured me it was safe, and said if he needed diabetic medication this is what he would take. I did NOT experience any side effects. I have been taking this for quite some time now. Good Luck on your journey.

DH took it for pre-diabetes also but he experienced heart palpitations and stopped using.

My husband has also taken it for years but I remember it causing him problems for a while. Then there was the recall and he was off of it for a while, now back on it. But his tolerance for medication is much better than mine. Pain pills even make me nauseous. It's almost like you have to have no life plans for a month or so if you need to introduce medication into your daily life cause you fear being away from home and getting sick.🤢

DH tried it twice for pre-diabetes. It cause severe constipation both times, which only got worse with time. When he stopped taking it, it took months for his bowels to start working right again. So for him, it was a NO. (And he never progressed to diabetes.)

But having said that, everyone is different and if it were me I'd give it a try. We're all different and you might have no side effects at all

hubs has taken for years with no side effects. I think has made adjustments, in dosage, as he lost weight and added exercise, his numbers went down. Give it a try, you can always stop. So many variables.

Years and years ago when I was morbidly obese and my blue sugar was trending upwards, my doctor prescribed it. I only took it a couple of weeks and then I experienced significant nausea and abdominal pain. I took myself off of it and told the doctor I wasn't taking it anymore. Dieting and losing weight took care of my blood sugar issues.

I am a Type 1 diabetic taking it off label. It helps with insulin resistance and is touted as helping people to live longer. I think it saved my life last year. Google how it extends lifespan and helps with age related diseases. Fortune had a great article on line about it. Mayo Clinic etc.

@Trinity11, yes, I saw that in my research and boy, talk about an oxymoron to me, lol. While side effects can make you feel like you're dying, they say it could extend your life, lol.

Oh, dear, @shoesnbags, I already suffer from constipation, yuk. But the doc says it usually gives diarrhea more often than constipation. My prescription is waiting at the pharmacy for pickup. Since my week is clear next week (which it usually is, lol) I'll probably give it a try. It's less than $7.

The side effects go away quickly for the majority @Mmsfoxxie . Well worth it to me. Start out very, very slowly on the time released tablets in a very low dosage. Build up to whatever your clinician tells you. I have outlived two heart attacks, cancer, heart failure and a stroke. After 54 years of Type 1 diabetes, my doctor told me he is writing about me and my 9 lives.😄

I don't have any problems with taking the extended release.

I think that it helps to take it with food, rather than on an empty stomach if you're prone to any nausea.

When I first started Metformin, I was on the regular and not the extended release, and I did have some GI distress from it--nausea and diarrhea--so when I followed up with my doctor he then switched me over to the extended release form/XL.

I take it twice a day and when I take it at night I take it with a little snack so that I'm not taking it on an empty stomach, but that's what I've been told to do with it.

If you have any questions about taking it, I would check with your doctor or pharmacist.

Check with your Physician about the Extended Release Metformin. I take one tablet a day, but my PCP changed it to Metformin ER to avoid GI issues which I experienced the first few weeks on Metformin. Haven't had any problems since changing to Metformin ER, which makes me much happier!

I do take that tablet following my dinner meal.

@BirkiLady, my endocrinologist had already prescribed it for me and mentioned that my system might have to adjust to it. I just jumped on here to get reviews from you guys cause I'm really apprehensive about taking it. But, I picked up the prescription Monday and will start taking it tomorrow since I know I don't have plans for a few days after. If I get sick, I'll have a few days to adapt at home. I'll be taking it with dinner as you suggested. 👍🏽.
