On 6/3/2014 petepetey said:
On 6/3/2014 Goldie76 said:
petepetey, I never heard of holy basil before. What form do you suggest? By the way, thank you for supporting my point of view that it is wise to research and advocate for yourself. Anyone remember Lorenzo's oil? The parents of Lorenzo kept their child alive for decades because of their drive and love.

I've only been reading about it and just tried it myself today, so the jury is out for me. However, many are reporting a calm feeling. It's an old form of treatment from India. You can have it in tea or just take a pill. It's not expensive and there don't seem to be side effects unlike the big pharma drugs. You can read about it on WebMD and various other sites. Amazon has reviews from users.

Thank you, petepetey. This whole anxiety thing is fascinating. Yesterday I read one of the posts above that cited some studies of women around menopause suddenly having issues with height. Wow, did I recognize myself in that! I will never forget when I had my first "fling" with this thing. We were at the kiddie ride section on the boardwalk at Rehoboth Beach, Del., and I was with one of my sons who was about 5 at the time. We were on a ride that was for children, mind you. I think it was called The Parachute, or something like that. Anyway, it couldn't have been any more than 15 ft. off the ground at its highest rising point. All of a sudden, I thought I could not endure it (the ride) one second more. Panic like I'd never known in my life rose in me, and I honestly thought I would have a heart attack before the ride ended. I began to theorize that I had becme like this because I now was concerned about my children's welfare and not just my own. But now that I've learned that it has something to do with the perimenopausal thing -- well. And bridges.... I have to steel myself to cross any bridge. The strange thing is that my sister-in-law, who, to deal in types, is the blonde, blue-eyed Homecoming Queen that she actually was, suddenly developed a fear of crossing the Bay Bridge in Maryland. When she started experiencing this sort of fear, I knew I wasn't alone -- and not in bad company, either. Actually, there must be quite a few of us because there is a service on the Bay Bridge to drive you across if you do not have the stomach to do it yourself.

When I went into menopause I suffered with debilitating anxiety attacks. After much trial and error I went on Paxil under the care of a psychiatrist. It worked. I was on the Paxil for three years. It was the only drug that worked to stop the attacks. I am now off the Paxil and doing well. In addition to the Paxil, I stayed in therapy, exercised learned to relax, get enough sleep, avoid caffeine. It's a rough illness. I hope you can find something that works for you.

I have to take xanax and celexa and it keeps my anxiety in check. I dont use the xanax all the time only when i needed it. I see a therapist too. Therapy and medication really help. Good luck.

Hi, natesgrandma! I'm sorry you're feeling so rotten!! Have you been diagnosed as having anxiety or panic attacks? What medication are you taking? Was it prescribed by a psychiatrist (medical doctor) or your family doctor? The treatment for anxiety is usually a combination of counseling and prescription medication. It sounds like the medication you are taking isn't doing its job!

I suggest you get an appointment with a good psychiatrist and see if you can be put on another, more effective medication!

Please keep in touch!

I have had anxiety attacks. I would go to work, then straight home. I couldn't go anywhere. I would get dizzy, lightheaded, thought I would faint. I finally went to the Dr. I was refered to another Dr who gave me a prescription and counseling. I found counseling to be a waste of time. I would ask for a different prescription. I wasn't able to feel normal without the prescription.

There are many anti depressants that help curb anxiety but not every medication works for every person. They say you have to stay on it a few weeks to see if it is working, as sometimes you actually feel worse for a few days. Pills like Xanax and Ativan should only be taken for a short period because the are highly addictive. Talk to your doctor. I hope you feel better.

The fact that you don't like the counseling could either mean it's working or making you uncomfortable or that you need a different counselor. I found counseling to be enormous help with anxiety. The right medication can also help. You need to discuss this with the psychiatrist and your counselor.

Make up a short mantra, memorize it and repeat it over and over again -- either out loud, if possible, or inside your head when you feel anxious. You also might say a short prayer asking for help, and make some gesture with one of your hands to go along with the prayer. Focusing on the prayer and the hand movement will take your mind off the topic that is making you anxious. Before you know it, the anxiety has passed.

If you've been on it awhile and it isn't helping you you need to consider switching. Also ask about Ativan (lorazepam). It's a mild tranquilizer that will help with the attacks.

My symptoms are: dizzy and lightheadness, just feeling sick.

I was diagnosed with Anxiety/Panic Disorder and Clinical Depression in the mid 1990's. Spent 7+ days as a mental ward inpatient. During that time they worked with individual counseling/group counseling/classes pertaining to causes and prognosis for a recovery.

Unless you have had a specific diagnosis by a Doctor of Psychiatry of a Panic/Anxiety Disorder, it is not wise to self-diagnose as it, like with many others, can be a sign of just plain ole stress and more of it than your mind and/or body at times seems to be able to handle.

For me I will never consider myself as "recovered, but always in recovery". Diseases of this nature are not usually the type that just up and go away never to return. Even with proper medications and regular therapy some people still struggle a lot with this type of "diagnosed mental issue".

It is not unusual for a spouse or others close to you not to really comprehend what one with this disease is going through daily, sometimes hourly or even less. One can be feeling on top of the world one minute and so far down the next minute they lose their perspective and desire to live. Yes, with this disease it does happen and I work my mind almost constantly monitoring how I feel and if something feels different mentally? I have ready made ways with which to deal with them.

Forget about what your husband or anyone else thinks unless they have been through this "deep black hole in life". They cannot and will not completely understand unless they serve their time dealing with this terrible part of way too many people's lives.

Wishing you the best but never self diagnose be it a physical or mental issue. Sore bodies do not equal broken parts. Painful minds does not necessarily equal Anxiety/Panic Disorder and I can tell you there is a very, very distinct difference between "lots of stress" and having this worst of the worst disorder that many suffer through much of their lives.
