Oral Surgery Instructions Concerning Nails and Makeup

I had a procedure today in the oral surgeon's office. The instructions for preparing for the surgery mentioned the face should be freshly cleaned and index fingers should be exposed. Since a previous post had discussed the nail issue, I am posting the exact wording from a photo.

Doesn't surprise me. I've had periodontal surgery and an implant. They probably want to keep an eye on your coloring. I know they use those pulse-ox things on your index finger but I figured those measured through your skin, not your nail, but I don't know. I wouldn't wear makeup to have any surgery. I figure I'm gonna be in bed at least for awhile even after I get home and I wouldn't want to get makeup on my pillow. These days I don't even wear makeup to go to the doctor just because I'm just not that concerned about it. I could see forgetting about the nail polish though without those instructions. I generally don't wear that anymore either, but did put some on a couple of weeks ago and do plan to wear some this weekend.

@Icegoddess I think you're right. They usually never want anything on your nails so they can watch your coloring during surgery. After the holidays, I'm getting ready for some dental implant work myself. I'm looking really forward to finally having it...but dreading at the same time lol. Any advice on what to expect?

They monitor the nail beds as they will get dusky or blue with a lack of oxgen. This has been known for decades.

Are you having general anesthesia?

I had all my dental implants done

under "local", with no restrictions. (Several different doctors, over a period of 20 years....3 to 5 teeth at a time.)

@cheriere Not really. It's been several years and I don't remember a whole lot about the actual procedure. They used a cocktail of two drugs during, one of which was fentanyl. I didn't have much pain afterwards and if I took pain meds, it was only for a day or two.

After the initial surgery and healing time, I went back in to have the post uncovered. It was initially covered by my gum. Once the post is revealed they sent me back to my dentist who completes the process much like getting a crown. My tooth is not a cosmetic tooth. It's not seen by anybody and is smaller than the surrounding teeth. It's basically a spacer following braces to keep my teeth from tryng to fill that spot.

Have you already had your consultation? Depending on your age, that could determine how complicated things are. They were surprised that I had enough bone in that area since I lost that tooth when I was a kid. It was actually a baby tooth with no permanent one underneath. Using your teeth actually helps keep the bones healthy, so not having a tooth there normally would result in bone loss. If there's bone loss, the process gets more complicated and takes longer.

@Icegoddess Yes, I've had a consultation with both the oral surgeon and the dentist. They both agreed that I have enough bone so thankfully that won't be an issue. However, the dentist also does implants himself, so his opinion differed somewhat than that of the oral surgeon as to what should be done. This is a tricky situation for me now...I'm not sure what I'm going to do 😟

Interesting. When I had oral surgery, I got the no makeup instruction. They didn't say anything about nails. I think there's a small chance that the fake nails might interfere with the fingertip oximeter they use.

I noticed that this specifically says no artificial nails or gel polish. Doesn't say not to wear regular nail polish, which is what I wear. So it must not be for the purpose of watching the color of your nails. Maybe it's for the pulse ox thing??

I had a over 2 hour dental implant surgery last year and not one word concerning makeup, face or nails. All I had to do was show up.

I didnt need a bone graft, I had enough bone, I was one of the lucky ones.

I had my knee replaced. I could wear anything on my nails ...fake or natural, just no jewelry.

I remember years ago being told to wear NO nail polish for surgery. (I don't think gels and fake nails were "in" at the time.) The last several surgeries I've had, there was no mention of nails at all.

When I was in the hospital with Pneumonia, the pulse ox could not read though my Red polish they had to put the monitor on my toe where there was no polish

I've never been told to not wear nail polish or fake nails to surgery. Dental implant surgery as well as cervical spine surgery, both not a word regarding fingernails.

Gel nail polish is a type of polish that last longer and wears harder than your usual nail polishes. It requires "curing" under a UV light and, once cured, seems to wear like iron. It requires a longer process to remove, generally soaking each finger with an acetone-soaked cotton wrapped in foil and left in place for 15 minutes.

I completely agree on that. My regular dentist who is very young does implants. However, I've opted to go with the oral surgeon I've known for years. She has nearly 25 years experience. She does cost more, but in the long run I think it'll be worth it.

My implant surgery and extraction was done by a periodentist, my regular dentist did the final crown. One tooth cost me 8500 but my insurance paid 1500, yikes !!!
